North-South-Divide-Darts

This week we review Week 2 matches , feature an interesting Who are Ya? with Welsh Neil from The Tavern team, Pikey Pete’s Predictions and have another venue review with guest reviewer Drama, from Black Magic.

untitled

Division 1

Toros against Mabuhay and Pikey Pete got this one all wrong when he really underestimated the Toros team, who emerged from this fixture with a well-earned draw. Mabuhay were missing their Korean wonder boy for the match and lost some crucial matchups. It was fairly nip and tuck through the whole evening but no-one can deny that Toros deserved to snatch the final team game to get a share of the spoils. Marc was particularly strong for the home side, with a great win over the highly fancied Adrian. He helped himself to six tons and four checks, a feat similarly achieved by team mate Cris. For Mabuhay, Zarggie was on fire with a brilliant 12 tons and while Ben would be happy with three checks, he could not transfer that form into a Singles win.

As expected the match at Vinyl was a close affair that went right down to the team game in the search for a victor. A Rick check claimed victory on the night for the home team. A night of high quality was on show ,with some impressive stats for both teams.  For Those Guys ,Bunch of Bangers had one of his best nights of darts for a while ,with six tons and three checks ,including a comfortable Singles win. Odilicious kept up his good Singles form and a very useful 112 High Finish. For Vinyl , Rick once again showed he has settled back in to Div 1 life ,with 7 tons , though will be disappointed with his Singles loss. Huck showed some early promise in the doubles ,only to see lady luck desert him in the Singles and Lee was just having a night off to sort through his handbag at the bar ,with Bob’s help.

The Tavern claimed their first victory of the season with a narrow 7-5 win over Charmed Assassins. A late surge of form , saw them win the last four games to get a very hard fought three points. Patrick and Jeff had given the Assassins some hope ,but no-one else could perform in the Singles as the team returned from Phu My Hung pointless and dejected.Although losing narrowly in the Singles ,Rab scored well ,with a return of seven tons and Karl had a successful night with four checks and three tons. For the Assassins not a great night on the tons scoreboard ,with no-one getting over two but a useful four checks from Jeff. They look onward to next week’s game and hope for a change in their fortunes.

In the final match it was good to see Pinoy Patriots get out a full side this week , though it wasn’t going to be their night as they went down 8-4 to Ice Blue. They were still well in the game after the triples and doubles but four straight loses in the Singles condemned them to yet another miserable night. Ryan and Leo gave the scoreline some respectability with two late wins, though they are really missing last seasons top performers Jeorge and Mike ,who have yet to make an appearance. Most of the team made some contribution but scoring tons was not on the agenda ,with no –one getting more than two. For Ice Blue ,Hung was the star of the show with a remarkable six checks to go alongside four tons and a high finish.

Division 2

Division 2, is at this stage, looking like a very competitive competition with three teams at the top separated by legs differential. After three draws last week we saw two more this week.

No Star Where once again will be a little disappointed as after racing into a 3-0 lead  they were pegged back to 3-3. They then rallied in the Singles, only to lose the team game against the Rottens and have to settle for a point. A pretty fair result though as both teams finished with 13 legs a piece. Guppy continued to be the form player in the Division, with 6 tons and four checks, with most support coming from Y. For the home team nearly everyone made contributions with Rob W being the pick of the bunch with three tons and three checks.

The Phukkers are propping up the table after remaining pointless due to a narrow 7-5 loss to the Dirties. A highly entertaining game that the Dirties sealed before the end of the Singles.  A moment of near controversy in the Doubles ,when Gear checked a double fourteen ,not knowing that Jimish had decided to write the Dirties score on the board in Hieroglyphics and he should have been going for 29 not 28. The Dirties benefitted from claiming both Triples early on and getting the better of the scores in the Singles. Davison topped the stats for them with five tons and four checks, with other major contributors being Dixie, Devo and Pato. For the luckless Phukkers, Geordie helped himself to five tons and four checks, with Jimish supporting him with four checks and three tons. It is early in the season but the Phukkers are going to need to step it up if they are not once again going to be embroiled in a relegation struggle.

Probably the most surprising score line of night came at Shrine, where BnB dispatched Madhouse 10 -2. A win for BnB was maybe slightly predictable but the margin of the win not. A couple of narrow losses in the doubles and a bad start in the Singles meant that Madhouse were staring at defeat early in the night.  They did finish on a high claiming the team game through a Philip check but it was far too late by then. For BnB it was a great team performance, with Jayar being the most impressive with four tons and three checks. Their domination of the Singles shows that they have a squad that will challenge most others in the League and maybe, just maybe, they are the favourites to take the title.

The Bounced Checks continued their fine form claiming a fine point from their game with Alayah, though it took a team game win to snatch the point. Once again it was a team effort with most players making useful contributions. Ryan scored well, with five tons and Johnny claimed his second Singles victory of the season  with a convincing win over the dangerous Mr Z. For Alayah, Willy looks back to his old form and his three checks and three tons were significant contributions to his team’s efforts. Tommy San and Phuong will be equally satisfied with their darts night.

Division 3

Well Pikey did say the Nomads would find a little more difficult this week ,up against Buddha Bar , and so it proved ,though they were never in any real trouble and came out with pretty comfortable 8-4 win ,after taking the first five games. John ,Tun and Adam put up some good resistance, all winning their Singles but it was too late by then. Glyn will wonder how he scored seven tons and a 138 high check for Nomads and still only got two checks to show for it. Logan was another who scored well but still managed to lose his Singles.

Projectile Dysfunction are still taking their time to aclimatise to Saigon competitive darts as Black Magic used all their experience and guile to give the new boys another bloody nose ,with a 9-3 win. It had all started so brightly for the team from Pitchers as they won the first two triples , but after that, the only ray of light was an Adam win in the Singles . A dominant Singles performance for Black Magic saw them claim victory early on ,though a few of those wins had to go to a third leg. Old campaigner Tin Tin scored well with four tons, but the overall team performance was what clinched it them ,with all the squad making useful contributions.

BAZ eventually decided to join the party and picked up a 8-4 win over  fellow new team Dailo’s, who fell to their second defeat in a row. For Baz ,Donald was back to his old fighting form ,with six tons and Matt shone through with 4 checks. Suprisingly Alan is finding life a little hard with his new team ,though his class should come to the fore before much longer. For poor Dailo’s, Sang showed he could be a useful player and he was given admirably support from Soso and Ryn.

In the final match Bernies continued their fine start to the season with an 8-4 win over the Pricks, who once again found the home comforts of the Emergency Room, gave them little advantage. Bernies dominated the Singles to take the game, with only Tripps claiming a victory against them. As with Projectile Dysfunction ,it had started so well with two triples wins for the home side but then they collapsed like a Premiership footballer on the end of a flick of a finger. Top performers for the home team ,being Dart Vader and Tripps. For the winning side a great all round team performance with five players getting three checks each. Thanh Tiger and Yuki helping themselves to three tons as well.

Neil De Claire – The Tavern

This week we talk to Neil , a long time resident of Saigon and well known chef at various places over the years. He currently turns out for The Tavern but has played for quite a few teams in his time.

10393835_799443490073779_4518452714065429692_n

1. Neil you are quite a well-known figure around town, having worked in a few of the city’s watering holes. Tell us why you arrived in SE Asia and give us a brief outline of your time here.

I arrived in S.East Asia after working a summer season in Corfu 1999. Where I met a brilliant British chef Nick Medhurst who had been working all over S.East Asia for 15 years. I returned to Wales after the season and out of the blue Nick called and asked me to join his Vietnamese wife and himself in Phnom Penh. So that was it I packed my bags and jumped on a plane. After a very hard 10 months I arrived in Vietnam, where I started work at Chu bar on Dong Khoi Street. Probably the smallest kitchen I’ve ever worked and the strangest mix of clientele from the much loved Trinh Cong Son and other top Vietnamese musicians to wealthy Vietnamese, Viet Kieu and Expats. Next I joined Mogambo’s and the one and only LANI. Then a short spell at The Wild Horse steakhouse before moving to the famous Sailing Club in Nha Trang for a couple of years. Ireturned to Saigon to work at the original Aussie sports bar CAFE LATIN and the wild Mr Keith. Then it was on to the Irish bar Sheridan’s for a few years followed by a brief spell at the Paintball in district 2 and now currently @ The Tavern in Phu My Hung. It’s been a pleasure to work and meet so manydifferent people from all walks of life and nationalities. There are so many
stories and great memories

2. What about your darting history here and before your arrival?

I never played much darts before coming to Vietnam. It was whilst I was working at the Aussie sports bar Cafe Latin in 2007 that the expat team the Latin Lovers asked me to play. Enjoyed a few memorable seasons with a great bunch of guys. I had a few years off until I joined my current team the Tavern in 2013 where it seems to be compulsory for the manager to play.

3. Are you passionate about anything else other than darts and the perfect sausage roll?

I’m passionate about my wonderful wife and my 2 daughters. Also, being a Welshman Rugby has to be included. For those of you that have met my father (Bryan) over the years I’m very passionate about trying to get him to keep his T shirt on while he walks around the streets of HCMC during the day.

4. The Tavern have quite a small playing squad .Give the low down on the team attitude and the characters that make up your squad.

The Tavern team has come a long way in the last few seasons, from Div 3 to D1 and managed to avoid relegation last season and I feel that a lot of credit should go to Karl for keeping the team together over the last few years. The Tavern’s small squad of merry men as withany other team obviously we want to win. At the end of the day win or lose we hope sportsmanship and a good time was had by all. Our new Captain Dan is the level headed gentleman of the team, a good, solid and reliable plplayer. Vice Captain Kyle, is the baby of the team and a gentle giant, our most improved player of the previous season, don’t make him shotgun a beer as he wont miss a check all night

Rab (Robert) the terrier of theteam with a tenacious will to win. The stress of his busy working schedule can sometimes affect his darts and is now participating in meditation classes. On his day one of the best players in the league. Rab was our captain last season and the driving force behind us NOT being relegated. Karl is the longest serving member of the team and former Captain for many seasons. A quiet, affectionate character with a huge passion for the win. Can lose his mojo and things can fall apart. Affectionately known by his team as The Wolf at The Top Of The Hill. Can compete with the best. Joel is a jovial chap. Returning to the team after missing most of last season due to studies. He’s not quite back to his best, as soon as he remembers to eat the mum’s meat pie just before playing everyone watch out.

5. Favourite finish?

My favourite finish is anything that wins

6.Being in charge of the Tavern you have to remain a pillar of sobriety all the time but when you do partake on the occasional Tuesday, what’s your tipple of choice?

Being a pillar of sobriety is easier said than done. I’ve been drinking beer Larue for the last 10 years. If not available usually Tiger. The odd shot of jager or sambucca might sneak in.

7. Favourite darts venue in town that you have played in either past or present.

The old Aussie sports bar Cafe Latin had a good private area for darts. Game On, The Tavern and Red bar

8. Best darting memory

Whilst sober absolutely none. The night Rab checked the team game to get us promoted to division 2, the following team pile on, meant poor Rab was unconscious for a few moments. Only Tavern players will get this one, The Camel
Toe night, I had so many tears in my eyes i couldn’t see the board.

9. Welsh rarebit or cheese on toast?

Welsh rarebit of course. For convenience cheese on toast is always agreat substitute.

10.Favourite opponents

The former Underground Team, featuring Michael Keung, Tom Cummins and  Thierry the chef. Always a great night and the darts would end up in 2nd place. Udder Team great rivalry and fun. Mabuhay always a pleasure to play against one of the best teams in the league.

11. What can piss you off during a night of darts on Tuesday?

Venues that unfortunately have access to the toilets right where your playing darts. Traveling to a venue during the wet season.

PIKEY PETE’S PREDICTIONS WEEK 3

A short version for Pikey this week as he has been stuck on Thunderbird and Tennants Super Strength all weekend. He had his usual mixed bag of results last week, a couple spot on and couple waaaay off!!

crazy-dave

So to this week.

Division 1

Mabuhay will be looking to get back on the winning trail after a tough draw against Toros last week. They return to home turf at Phattys, but will need to be wary of Ice Blue ,who have started the season well. Will The Black Pelican return?

Pikey is going for a home win 8-4.

Those Guys will be smarting after losing the epic battle against final last week. Again I think home advantage will be critical here against a Tavern team who got back to winning ways last week .

Tavern will give them a battle but Pikey sees another 8-4 home win.

Other games

Charmed Assassins 3 v Vinyls 9

Pinoy Patriots 5 v Toros 7

Division 2

Madhouse and Phattys have competition history going back many seasons and they will meet once again at Game On. Traditionally tight games it is a tough one to call. Phukkers players are inconsistent as hell and if they perform like the last two weeks they will get turned over again.

As Pikey has soft spot for the Phukkers he is giving them the benefit of the doubt and saying a 6-6. But don’t put your caravan on it!

The Dirties picked up a useful win last week but it could be a harder game this week against a BnB side in form . Gear and his troops will need to be firing again this week.

Pikey sees an away win here ,though it could be tight ,so a 7-5 victory to BnB.

Other Games

Really Rottens 7  V Alayah 5

Bounced Cheques 6 V  NSW 6

Division 3

Dailo’s and Projectiles prop up the table and are both pointless and struggling to impose themselves on games. Well something has to change tonight. Hard one to call.

Pikey going for a 6-6 draw. Hard to separate these two.

Other Games

Buddha 7 v Patient Pricks 5

Black Magic 5 v BAZ 7

Bernies 3 v Nomads 9

Venue Review – Pitchers Bar and Grill

Review by Drama, Black Magic

12314132_10153188827822341_8125100080194941177_n

This week’s venue review was kindly supplied by Mr Paul Frazer ,otherwise known as Drama. His team visited one of the new venues in the league ,Pitchers Bar and Grill.

12734283_1347680708591333_4201216002899982675_n

Only a short 11-hour drive from District 1, Pitchers Sports & Grill, owned and run by Aussie Adam (ex Boomerang), is a great new addition to the Saigon pub and darts scene.

It’s quite a large space, and open air too, with plenty of tables and places to sit. As it is open air, it can warm up a bit, but not too bad. They’ve only been operational about 6 months, but they’ve got a nice little set up, and a few regulars already. If you’re out D7 way, and looking for a spot for a cold beer, this will do you nicely.

Darts Area: Two good boards, with the both scoreboards next to the boards. The right board is on the wall running perpendicular to the board wall, and the scorer was a little too close to the playing area and in the darters sight. Still, a nice playing area, and with the addition of extra lighting above the boards, will get even better. – 7/10

Service: Good. Quick, friendly, and efficient. No dramas with the bills at the end. – 9/10

Snacks: A few very tasty thin crust pizzas. They’ve also got a nice menu if you’re in the mood for some bar snacks and pub grub. – 8/10

Drinks selection: Excellent. Choice of 6 beers on draught, wine and spirit list good. Although, no Tiger draught if you’re so inclined. If you’re not, you’ll be well served. My ice cold Sapporo draughts went down a treat. – 8.5/10

Smoking or Non Smoking: Inside smoking after 9 pm, otherwise, outside smoking, with sand drum ashtrays.

Atmosphere: A few other people around, but the darts teams supplied the action. Good music, and plenty of TVs with plenty of sports. The Saigon Heat also pop in after their practices. It was a treat for them to witness some real athletes in action. 7.5/10

Toilets: Downstairs. Clean, but no wash clothes or hand towels, just a hand dryer.

Overall: A great new spot, which I think teams will be very comfortable playing at. A few tweaks here and there, and it will get even better. 8/10

Division 1

The Vinyls v Those Guys

The Vinyls head into this one lacking match practice after unfortunately missing a few games last week due to forfeits from the Pinoys. This could be a classic as both teams boast strong and experienced squads to choose from. Mario returns to the Vinyl fold in all likelihood and Matt and Rick started the season strongly. Old heads Lee and Huck provide backup in what could be a strong singles lineup. They will need it against the equally impressive Those Guys. Big Boy and Odilicious are great scorers and like Vinyl they have strength in depth if anyone is off form. Ruud and Matt also produced some of good darts last week as they brushed aside the challenge from Charmed Assassins.

Pikey says it could be a close one but is putting his lucky pegs on a 7-5 win for the Guys from Malt – probably decided in the Team Game..

The Tavern v Charmed Assassins

Both of these teams were comprehensively beaten last week and will both see this as a possible match where they can claim three points this season. Neil from the Tavern will be seeking to turn his tons into game winners, after falling short in his checking last week. They will be happy to be playing at home this week and a favourable singles draw could see them claim their first win. The Assassins will beg to differ and with consistent darters like Jeff and Andy G I can see them putting up a good fight.

Two fairly evenly matched teamS ,however I believe Neil’s sausage rolls will be the deciding factor in an 7-5 victory for the home team

Other games

Toros 3   v Mabuhay 9

Ice Blue 7 v Pinoy Patriots 5

Division 2

Alayah v The Bounced Cheques

Alayah will be looking to build upon a strong end to the game against NSW. It was a good team performance and they will look again to Mr Z and Willy to set the standard in what is sure to be a tight game. Bounced Checks were the only Division winners last week, with a convincing win against Phattys Phukkers. Thuong had a night to remember and her ability to check quickly will put Alayah under pressure. The win was all the more impressive as one their top players last season, Matty, was missing.

Pikey Pete wouldn’t stake his caravan on this but this could be a real good game and fancies The Bounced Cheques to just sneak it 7-5.

No Star Where v Really Rottens

Looking to pick themselves up from last week’s disappointing end of match collapse, when victory was just within their grasp, No Star Where have their second home game in a row. Fudgie will be looking for more clinical performances from his team in the Singles this week, though will have been buoyed by his own game and the support offered by Eng and Rob W. They come up against a Rottens team, who were quite dependent on Guppy last week. He was involved claiming four of their six points. They will looking for more support from the team this time around and in Alex and Roch they have players capable and experienced enough to give the Rottens a good chance of victory and show they are not a one man ,albeit a small one, team.

Pikey is going for another tight match but fancies NSW to just snatch it. 7-5

Other Games

Phattys Phukkers 6 v The Dirty Blues 6

BnB Shrine 7 v Madhouse 5

Division 3

BAZ V DM Dailo’s

Pikey read Matt C’s Facebook report on their rather surprising defeat last week. Obviously the discomfort they felt at the venue was reflected in a disappointing performance, where only Peter and Sally left with head held high. They no doubt have been back at the oche since to fine tune their game and looking at last week’s result for fellow new team DM Dailo’s, the team from Phu My Hung will be confident. Dailo’s were given a tough introduction last week with only Sam Chan and Sang really troubling the scorers.

Pikey sees a win this time around for BAZ  and is sticking his neck out for a 10 -2 victory

Nomads v Buddha Bar

Buddha’s tough start continues and though they performed admirably last week to overcome fancied BAZ; this may prove a little more difficult. The Nomads play their first fixture at their new home Malt and many of their team has been playing in social tournaments there, for much of the off season. Nomads cruised to victory last week with an all-round great team performance. It will be harder this week but they will see it as an opportunity to smash down one of their potential rivals early on.

Pikey sees another pretty comfortable victory for The Nomads and is going with a comprehensive 8 -4 win for the home team.

Other Games

Projectile Dysfunction 4 v Black Magic 8

Patient Pricks 4 v Bernies Best 8

This week’s edition comes a bit earlier than normal due to me sitting at home on my sickbed and no voice.  We have a brief review of the first games of the season , A Who are Ya? with Mario Jukic, a look at the new teams in the Division 3 and a venue report on the Shrine Clubhouse Sportsbar.

Thank for some nice comments on the blog from some of guys I met on Tuesday and I will be approaching a few people to make contributions in the coming months. And any gossip either team wise or venue wise  will be much appreciated.

Watch out for Pikey Pete’s Games previews early next week. He had a few results spot on but generally it was a mixed bag ,so I would stay away from his tips if you fancy a spot of online betting!

Week 1 Review

Division 1

The Champions kicked off in impressive style against Tavern at Phattys on Tuesday night. The result was never in doubt from early on and despite some fight back in the singles from Karl and Dan , it was a pretty comfortable night as Mabuhay ran out 9-3 winners. Pikey had predicted ‘The Black Pelican’ would be a force this season and he did not let down his new team mates, with 5 checks, a couple of tons and a high finish. Raymond and Adrian contributed their usual high amount of tons, with Raymond also getting 4 checks. For the Tavern , some good scoring and Neil will be disappointed to come away with nothing after 7 tons on the night.

Those Guys overcame a few tense games in the triples and doubles ,to take control of their match in the Singles in their meeting with Charmed Assassins. Big Boy threw impressive darts both in terms of scores and checks. He was ably supported throughout the night by Ruud and Odilicious. The Charmed Assassins did not score too badly ,but only Phat and Andy G could stop the decline in the singles. A solid 8 -4 win sees Those Guys continue their fine form from last season.

Elsewhere, Toros and Ice Blue fought out a tough 6-6 draw .Toros star performers Cris and Neil from last year were playing well and new addition Bebe will be very happy with her debut ,claiming a singles win and three checks for the night. Ice Blue will be disappointed to lose the team game but will be happy to start this campaign unbeaten.

Pikey had mentioned the problem Pinoys may have this season due to player attendance ,and their heavy defeat to Vinyls unfortunately included quite a few forfeit games. But credit to the 4 players who turned up especially Russ and Leo, however at an immediate disadvantage already ,Vinyl did not show much pity with Matt and new addition Rick putting them to the sword in a 10 -2 victory.

Division 2

An outstanding performance from Thuong ,ensured that the newly named Bounced Cheques , head the table after a excellent 8-4 win over Phattys Phukkers. She hit 3 tons and 5 checks to start the season in fine form. Joshua also had a great night but generally it was a solid all round team performance. For the Phukkers, Convict and Ben were the only real players to put up too much fight on a night when checking was a major issue for some of the team.

All the other games in the division were much tighter and ended up in 6-6 draws. The Rottens came back from 6-4 down to snatch a  late draw against BnB. Guppy being their star with his 7 tons and 5 checks. For BnB, a solid team performance score wise ,with most getting at least 2 tons and Leo and Sam on fine checking form.

The Dirtys had an up and down night ,leading 4-1 going into the Singles ,they soon lost that advantage to Madhouse. Then managed to claw it back through singles victories for Davison and Dixie , only for Madhouse to snatch the team game with a Lars check. Not the most high scoring match , with not too many tons ,though Dixie, Markus and Paul shot well. Colin from Madhouse topped the checking for the night with 4.

NSW will be bitterly disappointed after throwing away a 6-2 lead in their match against old foes Alayah. Captain Fudgie had led the way along with good darts from Eng but a spectacular collapse ,saw Alayah’s  Willy, Mr Z and Stubbsy claim victory in the last three singles and they held their nerve to win the team game and get what was looking an unlikely point.

Division 3

The Patient Pricks fears of a drubbing at the hands of Nomads came to fruition on Tuesday with a 10 -2 loss ,but I am sure the copious alcohol intake helped them overcome the pain. Tripps and Mad Alex claimed two great singles victories and scored well overall. However the power of the Nomads squad proved too much on the night, with Chad and Thuy Tran in particularly impressive form. Chad getting himself 7 tons and Thuy Tran 5 checks.

Bernies Best started the season well and gave Projectile Dysfunction a tough introduction to Saigon’s competitive darts. A couple of singles victories for Alex D and Frank will ensure positivity going on but the low tons scoring may count against them as the season progresses. For Bernies, Tram and Hai were the pick of the bunch but it was a strong team performance throughout the night in a 9-3 win.

Buddha claimed quite a surprisingly comfortable win over the fancied BAZ team ,and this bodes well for the season ahead. They quickly raced to a 6-1 lead ,before BAZ eventually woke up and made a game of it. Tun and Lan ,with 4 checks and 4 tons each were dominant, with great support from John. For BAZ, Donald scored well with 4 tons and Sally and Peter also put up a good fight. It will interesting to see how these two continue the season .

Black Magic’s smallish squad also had a comfortable night against the league’s other newcomers. They beat Dailo’s DM 9-3. Sang and Sam Chan look useful players for the new team, however the experienced campaigners from Black Magic played strongly. They did not scored highly but checked when it mattered. Beamer and The Gimp both having memorable nights.

Mario Jukic- The Vinyls

386077_10150597398229466_912098066_n.jpg

So Mario a quick introduction of how you ended up in Vietnam and how life here has changed for you since your arrival?

After a brief one week visit in 2007 I decided to come back for a couple of months in 2008 in between relocating from Adelaide to Melbourne and been here ever since. Guess I learned about “Vietnam?

What was your previous darting experience before landing in Saigon?

Basically none. Threw darts at a board whilst having a few drinks with friends. Hmmm, thinking about it nothing much has changed.

You have a few years’ experience in the League. Who have you played for and who have been some of your best team mates and opposition players you have come up against?

Played for Sheridans, then Da Vinci’s for a few games, Buccaneers whilst we were together for a few minutes, Ice Blue for a few games, and now The Vinyls.. Team mates and players? Well apart from yourself “Jimish” really can’t single out anyone to be honest, most players are great to get along with.. Might come back on that after a few beverages…

The League has changed a fair bit since you started in it. What have been the positives and negatives of this in your view?

Going into a 3 division league structure has probably been the biggest change since I started. I think this has helped with player/team standards of play to improve for those that want to improve/get promoted and given those that are happy to enjoy a drink and throw darts whilst doing that a place to go on a Tuesday night. For me this is the positive end of the deal, improvement, however when you mix the competitive players with the socializers there may be a tendency for some negativeness. It all gets sorted out after a season of two.

You have become a member of the Committee for the first time this season. What was behind your decision about standing as a member of it this time around?

I wanted to try see if I could hopefully do something that would benefit the league and make some sort of a contribution. Plus I wanted to hear what everyone in the bleacher seats has to say, so let’s see how that works out.

Your best memory of your time in Saigon darts. Oh man you are going to make an enemy of one of my team mates… Best memory was beating Paul Devlin in a Sheridans vs Da Vincis match. I had been playing for a season or so and he was the first really good player I beat and I brought it up every time, for a long time, when I saw him. I think it got to the point where he would walk into a bar, see me, and walk out!!!

Your favourite venue over the years.

It was Sheridans, first place I played in and was always comfortable and relaxing (plus the food was great). These days enjoy being in non-smoking venues, food and drink seem to taste better…

Most annoying or frustrating an opponent does during a match. For the players who beat me, them turning up is annoying otherwise not really bothered. The scorers however that keep bobbing their heads towards the board after each throw are a different story.

Tuesday night drink.

A Bier Larue where I can get it, otherwise alcohol or if Kris G ever offers, it will be a Heineken…

And away from the Oche, how do seek to relax and have fun.?

Love hanging out with my wife, watching movies, try to stir the pot on facebook, if I was back in Oz I would be shooting pistols alas no such luck here, and of course the occasional “Beer Buffet”.

This season we see four new teams added to the fixture list in Division 3, all playing at new venues around town.

The Nomads make a return ,with a few of their old playing squad joined by other players who have been regulars with other teams. Fancied to be strong contenders in Div 3 and playing out Malt in D1. Their first game victory I think emphasized how dangerous they are going to be for opponents.

BAZ are team playing out of Confidant Bar based in Phu my Hung. They too have many familiar faces in their line up and though they experienced a first game loss ,they can expect to become stronger as the season progress.

Dailo’s DM based at Dailo’s in D1 ,are seemingly a very new team, with few players, if any, having previous experience at playing in the The SIDL. Their first game saw a comprehensive defeat against the old timers Black Magic.

And finally out in Phu Hung at Pitchers Bar and Grill ,we have  the cleverly named Projectile Dysfunction ,with again a team roster of mainly new players.

Here three of these teams Captains look forward to the new season:

Projectile Dysfunction: Captain Matthew Levasseur

I was invited to start a team by Adam, the owner of Pitchers Sports and Grill.  There was a lot of interest by my buddies, so it didn’t take too long to fill up the roster with a group of good guys.  What we lack in skill we make up in good looks, mediocre jokes, and a thirst for beer.

Pitchers Sports and Grill is a great bar that caters to a lot of different needs.  There is an area for kids to play air hockey and foosball while their parents enjoy a wide variety of great food.  Try the Kenny F’ing Powers’ Pizza! The dartboards are in a great area near the back that doesn’t see too much foot traffic which makes it easy to focus. Adam and his staff work extremely hard and it shows in the food, drinks, and service.  The beer is cold and the company friendly.  What more could you ask for?
Matthew aka BOOM our only American teammate is well known for his modelling career with Sears.  After his career went south because of a skinny jean disagreement, he started playing darts in Seoul, South Korea.  Beware his strong play in tight pants.  Brett aka The Hobbit is a knee high terror when it comes to darts!  Watch out for his accuracy across the board!  Frank and Ryan are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to tossing darts. They have been living together and working together for 12 years.  Expect to see them in couple shirts as they throw a handful of 180’s a night.  Adam aka LUBOS is an Aussie terror who loves to beat the crap out of you on the board and then serve you an ice cold beer with a smile.  Alex aka Mr.Doyle is a nice guy until he gets throwing.  Don’t let his charm fool you because the moment you turn your back, he’s doubling out for the win. Matt aka Dart Vader is the captain of the Projectile Dysfunctions.  He started his career as a male porn star, but like his scenes, it was over way too soon.  Beware his annoyingly encouraging behavior!
Our aspirations for this upcoming season are to break all the league’s records and win the championship! But seriously, expect us to be an easy going team that’s looking to enjoy good company and be competitive.
Cheers,
Dart Vader

The Nomads – Captain Glyn Evans

Why did you guys  decide to reform The Nomads after playing for other teams?

We never wanted to split in the first place but last year we lost both David Riches (returned to Canada) and Brett Nelson (decided to take a break), and then couldn’t find any new members to replace them so we all ended up joining new teams in D1 (Those Guys, Vinyls, Charmed Assassins) and D2 (Dirty Blues). Slight fortuitously for us (though less so for them) The Prixxx split last season and we decided to start a new team with a couple of their old members (Thuy & Melvin) and some of ours but still using the old name Nomads.

One thing that needs to be cleared up; we never wanted to start over in division 3 but as a “new” team that didn’t play last season this was our only option. This is because there were less than 4 players joining from a disbanded team (The Prixxx), all other teams that players joined from still existed in Divisions 1 or 2. If we had demanded to re-join division 1 this would have had repercussions for any newly promoted (or relegated) team from other divisions and hence rejected by the committee.

2.       Description of your new home venue

We now play out of Malt (46-48 Mac Thi Buoi, Q1), which has a great darts set-up, delicious food and a shuffle board table. Thankfully for Brett it’s also a non-smoking venue.

3.       Players to look out for in the upcoming season – either ability or character wise

Well on our roster we have our Golden Boy Chad as well as top female darter Thuy. New team BAZ has some great players in the form of Alan, Donald and Augustine, they’re also really nice guys so we look forward to renewed rivalry with them.

4.       Aspirations for team in the upcoming season? What can we expect from you guys.

We’re just happy to be playing together again and looking forward to hanging out with familiar faces and some new ones every Tuesday.

Venue Review

Shrine Clubhouse Sportsbar

Above the rather swanky restaurant and cocktail place on Ton That Thiep, D1, is the newly revamped Shrine Sport bar, home to two teams in Division 2 – The Bounced Cheques and Shrine BnB. It was a darts venue previously and the revamp has not altered it too drastically, however the changes made all seem positive. It has been taken on by two well-known expats Terry and Tom. Many will know Tom from his time at nearby Phattys and Lindo’s. This was the first game to be held under the new management.

Darts Area: Two good condition boards, with one scoreboard at the rear and one alongside. Viewing can be done from the rear of the oches and also from the side seating area – 7.5/10

Service: No issues here .Quick and efficient and bills came promptly at the end – 9/10

Snacks: A nice big bowl of steaming hot potato wedges and a large and delicious seafood pizza. – 9/10

Drinks selection: My only criticism would be perhaps lack of choice in terms of beers available on draft. Only Heineken and Tiger presently but having just opened this may well change. Otherwise fine – beers cold and spirits good with just right amount of ice. 8/10

Smoking or Non Smoking? : Non Smoking with a large seated, covered balcony area for smokers provided outside.

Atmosphere: Not too many other customers. Music at good level and plenty of TV’s showing sport, if the darts did not entertain enough. 7.5/10

Toilets : Downstairs. Big and clean.

Pikey Pete’s Predictions

crazy dave

Pikey Pete makes a return to VFTO and looks at some of the opening games in the three Divisions. [ These predictions are based on the squad information currently on The SIDL]

Div 1

Mabuhay v Tavern

Can anyone stop last season’s Champions? Well the answer in a few games during the season may be yes but it would take a brave man to bet against them taking the title. They are led once again by Mario, an experienced Captain with many, many years of experience behind him. He has seen it all and done it all [though don’t tell his wife –I work with her]. The squad remains intact from last season with strong performers, Adrian, Zarggie, Jonel and Raymond all refreshed and itching to go again. Pikey Pete though is suggesting you look out for the form of an unlikely addition to this previously Philippines based team. Seen sneaking in some rather impressive pre-season practice was their new young Korean wonderkid –‘The Golden Pelican’ – brought up on the hard backstreets of downtown Seoul. Allegedly just brought in for the one season it will interesting to see how he fits into the tight knit group of Mabuhay.

The Tavern team may not be the largest squad in Division 1 but this small band of merry brothers performed admirably last year and ensured a continued presence in the Division, with some quality darts and fighting spirit. It may have been claimed that their home victories were a result of Chef Neil’s clever ploy of stuffing opposition teams into lethargy with his sumptuous pre-game snacks but that would be to take away from some impressive performances last season. In Karl and Rab, they have players that can perform consistently and also upset top players on their day. Dan has settled in well after his move from the defunct Dreamtime and has raised his game accordingly. But it is the team ethic which has really seen the team perform so well last season and with such a small squad they really need to continue that going.

In tonight’s game, I really cannot see anything but a comfortable victory for Mabuhay, who will aim to send out a strong message to the rest of the Division that they aim to keep their title once again.

Pikey Pete’s prediction: 9 -3 win to the team from Phattys

Pinoy v Vinyl

This could be an interesting fixture. The Vinyls will probably be missing Mario for this game but will be able to call on veteran new recruit Rick, who has moved from the folded Prixx. It is a strong looking squad and competition for places will be fierce. Lee will once again defy the ravages of age and look to medical science, to lead them to a top four place at seasons end.

Pinoys come up to Div 1 and I think their view is that they will just want a season of consolidation, after some impressive performances in Div 2. Pikey Pete’s sources have led him to believe that they may be weakened though by the loss of a couple of players in Rey and Bhong and they will need to make that Jeorge and Mike are available on a regular basis and that Ryan can escape from Phattys Management on a Tuesday.   I think they will survive the season ok if they can ensure those things, if not, I am not so sure.

Pikey Pete’s Prediction: Even with a full strength Pinoy side I think I will still go for an 8-4 Vinyl’s win

Other Games

Those Guys 8 v Charmed Assassins 4

Toros 6 v Ice Blue 6

Div 2

The Bounced Checks v Phattys Phukkers

This was the final game of last season for both these teams and was a nervous relegation [well not as it turned out] match. The renamed Check, whilst having a new name and a new home venue are once again relying on last season’s small playing squad. All of the team are capable of good performances on the night and have similarish records, with Johnny and Matty, Cathal and Sean topping their points scoring charts last season. They will hoping to continue their fighting spirit into the new campaign and show the same determination that helped them overcome a 5-3 deficit in the last meeting between the two sides.

The Phukkers will be seeking revenge after a rather spectacular collapse last season that saw them fall into the last relegation spot in the final minutes of the season. They have been reprieved and will be looking to maintain a much more consistent form over the next few weeks, in what is a very competitive division. They have some big hitters and will be looking to Geordie and Colin push them on and if he does not impose a self-imposed boycott this season ,Niall will no doubt ably assist them. Captain Brainy Smurf has a big squad to pick from and will be hoping his support players of Jimish, Ben and Margarita can quickly find their form. Smoggy, who on his day can beat most, may not feature as strongly, which may weaken them slightly.

Pikey Pete Prediction- A tight match once again, with a 6-6 result hopefully keeping both teams happy to have an unbeaten start.

No Star Where v Alayah

A game that both were not expecting to play after Alayah finished third last year but circumstances have brought together these two old campaigners to once again battle it out. Alayah really are a team of old [sorry guys] campaigners ,with many  with well over a decade of playing Saigon darts. Still playing and looking good are Emile, XQMe, Eric and Willy. They have so much experience to call on and whilst they may not be as competitive as in previous years, opponents would be foolish not to watch out for them. These guys have played some top darts in the past and will be looking to teach some of the up and coming young bucks in Div 2 a lesson or two. I do not see them challenging for titles but one thing is sure, they will enjoy the night and they will make sure whatever the result you will too! They are joined by Phuong, who has found a new home after the collapse of ACDC and she will be a great smiling addition to the team -they are well matched.

No Star Where have steadily rebuilt after a few lean seasons, where form and shortage of players have affected them badly. But one of longest surviving teams in the league had a very impressive season last time around and will be looking to make their mark once again in Div 2. However my optimism for the season may be tempered by the fact that I do not see three of their top performers on the team roster for upcoming matches. Captain Fudgie is always a strong competitor and Mike G can most definitely cause an upset, but to lose three of your best players would have been a blow to these guys. Fudgie will make sure they are competitive though and will make sure they perform to their best. I hope I am wrong about NSW once again struggling for numbers, because as I said ,they fought back to be a real force again last season. Pikey Pete remembers some good battles against Troy and Eng in the past, so if they can get those two playing regularly, that will strengthen them considerably.

Pikey Pete’s Prediction: NSW 5 Alayah 7

Other Games

Really Rottens 5 v Bnb Shrine 7

Dirty Blues 6 v Madhouse 6

Div 3

Patient Pricks v The Nomads

Probably a game neither side wish they were having but for different reasons however SIDL rules have brought together the social Pricks against the reformed , and whilst no less social ,probably more competitive Nomads. The Pricks I do not think have been looking forward to this game, against a team with some quite well established ex Div 1 and 2 players. But I would imagine they have just said sod it and give it their best shot and make sure they have an enjoyable night and Nomads certainly wish for the same. In Priestley, Tripps and Alex, the Pricks have some players, who if on form, will make the Nomads battle all the way. Looking further ahead to the season ,the Pricks will look to move on to probably more even matched games and do what they do best – throw, drink and enjoy [ which is the essence of our darts nights in Pikey’s view].

The Nomads are strong, especially for this Division, but as we have seen before when a strong Vinyl team started in Div 3, they won’t get it all their own way and players and teams often rise to the challenge. In their ranks they have Chad; consistently a good performer in the top division and Captain Glyn can also look to picking one of female top players in Thuy Tran, veteran Brett, TnT Logan and the competitive Melvin. Whilst a strong team ,this squad is small and whilst they are expected to maintain a strong title challenge ,they will need to make sure of regular attendance ,otherwise some other useful sides in Div 3 could cause an upset or two.

Pikey Pete’s prediction: I reckon Pricks will find it difficult against a full strength Nomads but expect them to pick up a few games – 9-3 to The Nomads.

Buddha v BAZ

Buddha Bar will be looking to bounce back from a very disappointing campaign in Div 2, where they really did not do themselves justice. They have kept together their squad for the last few seasons and have a fair amount of experience. They should have one of the division’s outstanding performers in Tun, who every year is near the top of the scoring charts. John had a fairly good past season and we saw fleetingly good performances from Dan, Lan and David. Captain Adam will be looking to return to form in this Division and show what he is truly capable of. Scotty perhaps was missed a bit last season, with not a lot of attendance. They should do fairly well in the upcoming season and I would predict maybe a top three finish, if they can keep their regular players attendance going.

BAZ are a newly formed team but one with plenty of experience and faces from seasons past. They have ex Prixx, Alayah and BIA players in their ranks, with Alan and Donald featuring most prominently. A few of their players may be a bit ring rusty after taking breaks from the league recently, but they will be coolly and wisely led by Kevin. I think most would imagine that we see them initially as the main competition to the Nomads in this league and they will need to live up to that.

Pikey Pete’s Prediction – I am going for a narrow 7-5 win for BAZ.

Well it has been a while since the last edition of View from the Oche. The last entry was made way back in October 2014, before I returned for a brief hiatus to the UK for family reasons. Quite a lot had changed on my return a few months back, with a plethora of new bars in town and a few new teams and players. Most of the old faces remain involved in the darts scene , just looking that bit older and unfortunately not wiser. Sad to see ACDC fold though :[

I was involved with my old team , The Phukkers , for a bit of the second half of last season ,though it was interesting after not throwing a dart for over a year ,how hard it was to get back into it – though I imagine my team mates will say I was just as shite as normal.

The off season has seen plenty of changes on the committee and plenty of banter on the Facebook page , before Glyn gets around to deleting posts . I actually love reading the Facebook arguments from afar and I guess it shows how passionate some people are about their darts.

I was having a beer a few weeks ago with one of the leagues old players Tim Russell and Brett Nelson ,in the rather nice new bar Malt ,when they mentioned View from the Oche and it occurred to me that I may start it up again ,especially with my family no longer over here . So it will be making a return for the new season and I hope it informs and entertains. All the old features will probably return and I will try to include some new ones ,once I have had time to think about it. Quite interesting reading the old entries back after all this time ,though most of it just seems like yesterday ,I guess that is the price I pay for being an old git !

Good luck next Tuesday.

I will soon be looking on from afar at the darts scene in Saigon ,no more humid nights ,spent drinking Asian larger in smokey bars , spending an inordinate amount of time trying to get a Madhouse finish. I have to return to the cold, wet and windy shores of my Newcastle home for the next ten months. It has been good fun and the friendship and camaraderie found in such innocent pleasures should not be underestimated to an expats lifestyle. Hopefully after what I would call some rather unsavory episodes in the first half of the season, our league can get back to what it should provide and build upon the strengths that have been such highlights to me.

In this edition of View From the Oche we see the return of Who Are Ya?, featuring the very talented Thuy Tran, the female player from The Prixx team. Pikey Pete tries his luck again with some detailed predictions. We have the long awaited Where Are they Now? We continue our venues review, this time with The Tavern and we review last week’s games and a return of You’re a Star ,the weekly look at who is topping the stats.

The darts photos around the venues are taken by Hoang Khanh and I nicked them off his Facebook page, but I hope you agree they are great and he has a real eye for a good photo, especially with what he has to work with sometimes [please see above!!]

wherearetheynow

The second installment of WHERE ARE THEY NOW? sees us once again return to Bangkok to catch up with an old player. Gary Dale Cearley was one of the pioneers of darts competitions in Vietnam and indeed we have people such as him, Charles and Marc Armstrong to thank for giving us the foundations for the League we all play in presently. They were very different days then and it was interesting to read his responses as they brought back memories for myself of long forgotten players like Mr Singh and venues like the Africa Bar.

GDC playing darts in Bangkok

1] Gary Dale you are what I consider to be one of the founding fathers of what we call The SIDL now. What was it like in the early days? For example the amount of teams ,the venues etc

In the very early days there wasn’t a league at all. There was only Ice Blue and the Gecko Bar. They played every Tuesday. They didn’t keep scores or records – other than at the Gecko Bar they kept records on the wall of 180’s and high finishes. In 1999 I was spending at least half of my time in Saigon (I was based in Hanoi at the time) and so I arranged for a Saigon vs. Hanoi battle in April of 2000. The darts were played over two days; the first at Fat Jack’s in Hanoi Towers and the final day at the Hanoi Club on West Lake. Fat Jack’s is now Jaspa’s I believe. This match was one of the ones that I will never forget, not just because it was the first Hanoi – Saigon match, but because I drew the first match against Emile Ho Bao Loc. Emile at that time was one of the better players in Saigon and I thought he’d embarrass me in front of the home crowd. Luckily I took that one 2-1. The first night Hanoi and Saigon played tightly I remember. But then the Saigon team he a big, big night on the town. Showed up to play hung over the next day and Hanoi proceeded to smash them. That’s the only time I ever played for Hanoi and I was the team captain. The very next year I was captain for the Saigon side!

As I mentioned, there had been only two unofficial teams in Saigon. Hanoi had a fairly developed league going when I left to move down. And Saigon’s unofficial league was to even be taking a break as well as the Gecko was closing its doors. They were going to open The Underground so their team was lain fallow. I’ll never forget the big party they had when the Gecko closed. It is another one of my great darts memories as Ice Blue won and I got to be in the very last match ever played there. I beat Anthony Dowden 2-1 by hitting a double twenty. After that there were rounds for the house over and over until all the hooch was gone then we all swarmed out into the street yelling and singing. It was a real darts party!

I met with Tom Cummins, Michael Keung, Tran Thai Dung, Charles Czarnecki and a few others and we agreed to form a league along the lines of what I’d been doing up in Hanoi. By that I mean a similar structure to what the Hanoi International Darts League (HIDL) was doing. Thus, the Gecko split into two teams, which eventually became TUG1 and TUG2 (which in turn eventually became the Young Guns). Both these teams played at The Underground when it opened for business. Ice Blue split into four teams: Ice Blue, which played at Ice Blue; the Really Rottens, which played at the Blue Gecko. There were two other teams as well which were run by Charles Czarnecki and Ajmir Singh. Charles’s team played at No. 5 Bar and Ajmir’s team also played at Ice Blue until they later moved to the African Bar and got the name, the African Bar Spear Chuckers. Not very politically correct but I think it was the only team with a name that might be better than the Really Rottens! I was the first league chair, which lasted from 2000 until mid-2002, when Patrick Aston shortly took over. The next year Marc Armstrong took it over. He was later replaced by Blaine Karst in 2005. And in turn I later replaced Blaine Karst in late 2005, but not in title – I was Vice Chair, but Blaine was out of the country for all this time so I was the de facto chair for about a year. Stephen Guess took it over after that if I remember correctly.

2] What were you doing that made you come to live in Vietnam?

Prior to Vietnam I lived in Korea for a while doing various consulting work. Except for my stint in the US Navy I have always been in or around the logistics industry. I came to Vietnam to work for a company run by an Orange County based Viet kieu who didn’t pay his bills so I after a few months of that I quickly left that group and went to work for Danzas, which at that time was the largest freight forwarder in the world. I worked for them in sales in Saigon for some time then got transferred to Hanoi where I opened their official office and was branch manager there.

On a side note, it was during that time in Hanoi I got lassoed into playing darts. I’d never played before. However I frequented a bar in the old quarter that was called The Emerald. It was a ‘Celtic’ bar, meaning it was an Irish pub owned by a Scotsman. Some of the locals in the pub had a darts team. There were the three Alans (Alan Sweeney, Alan “Ossie” Mathews and Alan Bulmer) and another Brit, Andy Farrimond. I was “invited” to play by the captain, Ossie Mathews. And being the taffy Welshman that he was, refused to take ‘no’ for an answer. He came to the part of the bar where I was sitting in conversation, grabbed my beer, a Kilkenny, and said “I’m taking this back to the darts board. If you want to drink this beer here in this pub you’re going to have to drink it with the team.” To be quite honest I was ticked off by the whole thing. I went back to get my beer when they informed me that I was up, my time on the board! Well, to make a long story short, I caved. For the first time in my life I played a match of darts. And I played terrible darts. Absolutely terrible. But I had reluctantly joined the team. I remained the worst player by far on the team for at least the next two seasons. Then I gradually improved. In fact, when Ossie convinced me finally to learn how to count the darts and not rely on the charts that’s when the real improvement came.

When I got involved in the league it was run by a guy named Phil Jornlin. Phil was definitely involved for the love of the game. But then there came a time that Phil had to leave Hanoi and he nominated me to take over. That was my first time to lead a league. I really got a lesson on politics at that point.

3] Who were the real characters in your day?

There were the guys who were heads and tails above most of the rest of the leagues. Blaine Karst and Tom Cummins in Saigon. Vince Gibbons and Stuart Osgood in Hanoi… (I hear all the way over here in Bangkok that these days the man to beat might be Rick Horton?) And who could forget my little buddy, Than Duc “Guppy” Liem. My brother, the old goat, Tran Thai Dung at Ice Blue, who has historically been one of the biggest supporters of darts while I was around. I really miss a Hanoi darter, Ben Puglisi, for his antics. I think my team, the Really Rottens, were a character in and of themselves. Patrick George “Stone Cold” Aston was in many ways my nemesis because whenever I did anything, either as captain of the Really Rottens or as chair of the league he’d do his best to remind me how flawed a human being I am. (And I say that in all humility.) Then there was Geert Van Doorslaer, who was the Really Rottens team mascot. I miss Kanjana “Na” Hathor as she was one of the most gung ho lady darters. And of course I really miss Michael Keung, everyone’s best friend.

4] One of the things which has sadly gone by the wayside despite the success of The SIDL , are the Hanoi v Vietnam matches. How often did they used to take place and were they very competitive?

From 2000 to 2004 this was twice per year. They’d visit once and we’d visit once. Like I mentioned before, Hanoi won the first bout but after that Saigon creamed the Hanoi team whether at home or away. Hanoi never won again. Because of this they gradually lost interest. The last time they traveled to Saigon they were two players shy of a team so Stone Cold Aston and John Eyres (aka “Dr. John Shorthair; aka Farmer John) volunteered to play for the Hanoi side. Hanoi would neither field a team to come South nor even put on an event for us to travel North for nearly another two years. However, when they finally did. They put on one hell of a two day event at the Hanoi Hilton Opera and it was the closest, best match ever.

Any of the Saigon players who were there will never forget this match because after two days it came down to the final double and I was lucky enough to have been playing in that duo with my team partner Kanjana “Na” Hathor (Ewers). What happened that day will live on in the annals of Vietnam darts history forever. (Just ask Lee Dunton if you don’t want to take my word for it.)

The Saigon team won the first day of the competition and we felt we had a comfortable lead. However on the second day Hanoi came in very, very strong. Much stronger than we expected. They kicked us around and we were caught on the hind foot for it. Coming to the end of the competition in the final eight matches we still had a lead. It should have been insurmountable but Hanoi wouldn’t die this time. Saigon took the first match but then Hanoi surprisingly and inexplicably won six in a row. I had gone into this round feeling very comfortable that Saigon would breeze through and win the day. Really, could they actually take all those matches from us? They’d have to play perfect matches and we’d have to drop to the basement for this to happen. However, I was paying close attention to this nonetheless and heard the scores going down. Every time I heard a Hanoi win they cheered louder and louder. And the wins kept coming in rapid succession. By the time Na and I were up against the Hanoi duo, Gunther and Eric, though it seemed to me that even as Hanoi was gaining we still somehow had the upper hand. Na and I were the last to play. We’d been staged that way because the team captain wanted to put the sure wins up front so we’d get it over with quickly. That strategy backfired when our ‘certain to win’ doubles teams all were losing. Our other doubles team was up 1-0 when Na and I started so in my mind we still had a back up life. We really should have been still in the driver’s seat. I checked for our team on our first leg but during that leg our other Saigon doubles lost their leg. They were now 1-1. During our second leg I heard the Hanoi team took out our other remaining doubles team, beating them 2-1. A pit grew in my stomach. We then lost that leg. It was 1-1. I was more and more worried with every toss of the arrow, whether it was them tossing or us.

Because we were now the last match going everyone from both teams was huddled around our board. All eyes were on us. And somehow, on a 701 match (the games were 501 but the tie breaking matches were 701), we’d fallen behind embarrassingly far our opponents. It was my turn to throw and the score favored the Hanoians 268 – 32. Yikes! Then as if by a grand stroke of luck I hit a 140. Gunther from the Hanoi duo was up next. His first shot was close. He hit a 16, barely missing his double. His second toss was an eight, again barely missing his double. His third shot went wild and hit an eighteen. Busted! The good news was that Na was up. The bad news was that she needed 128 and Eric would only still be on a 32 close. That said, Na still had no clue that the entire contest hinged on our outcome. I never told her. The reality that we could actually lose this thing was slowly taking over my mind but then, BAM! Na’s first shot hit dead center in the triple twenty! She looked at me and I said ever so lightly “Eighteen. Don’t worry. Just take your shot”. She barely hit a very sloppy eighteen that was hanging like it would drop out of the board at the slightest breeze. But it was still in there and as long as it was still in there it meant she had fifty left. She turned to me again and asked “What do you want me to leave you?” Firstly, I know in this situation you always go for it, but I was really sweating because I also had in mind they were still on 32 and they wanted it as much as we did, if not more. Their 32 would erase a lot of Hanoi angst over the years. We couldn’t risk letting them have another go at 32. I looked at Na and said “Go for the bull, Sweetheart.” She lined back up, drew back her arm, let her last dart fly and it hit the bull dead on, smack down the middle. The finish couldn’t have been scripted better in a Hollywood movie! There was pandemonium in the place. Na shot probably the best hand of darts ever in Saigon history if you ask me. And to me the best thing about her finish was at that point in time she hadn’t any idea what she’d just done. She thought that she hit a lucky shot and that we’d just won a leg and that everyone was cheering her good darts. She hadn’t a clue that her last three arrows won the day for the whole team. That may have been my favorite darts moment of any match I have been associated with in Hanoi, Saigon or Bangkok.

Another favorite moment in the meetings was the last time Saigon traveled to Hanoi before the aforementioned match. After the match Guppy got his head shaved. And even though I was there for all of it I still have no idea how it came about! I saw it happen. I saw who did it. But I have no clue why it happened. It as a hilarious moment though.

Lots of good fun was had in these Hanoi vs. Saigon matches. What a shame they came to an end. But I bet if the match was called today, you’d have more than one team of Saigon’s best ready to go. (Hanoi, will you ever be up to the challenge again?)

I am proud though that I was involved in Saigon’s first two international meets: with Singapore in 2005 and with Bangkok in 2008. Unfortunately, neither the Singapore nor the Bangkok events were repeated. I wasn’t around for the trip to China trip that came after that, and I am sure that was a blast like the other events, maybe even more so. That said, though I’d like to take part in a Saigon or Vietnam vs. Bangkok again, I believe that the Hanoi vs. Saigon matches are a natural. Have vs. Saigon is special. That Hanoi should play Saigon is a no brainer. These competitions should continue if the HIDL ever reforms and becomes a solid league again.

5] What do think the reasons are for the demise of darts in Hanoi but its success in Ho Chi Minh?

Any time you see the success of a darts league you are seeing the same thing that leads to a success in business. There is a vision for the group. The end product is good. You listen to your customers, the players. There is stability at the head. There is involvement from the players. Hanoi used to have this but then they seem to have lost it on the vision side. In the discussions I have had with Hanoi darters throughout the years it seems that no one there can agree on how the league should go. If I was there and was going to do it again I’d do it the same way it was set up in Saigon. I basically took exactly Hanoi’s old format and rules and applied them in Saigon. I took this wholesale, fait accompli. Then gradually we changed them in Saigon to match what the players, the bar owners and everyone else involved wanted. But in Saigon we never stopped planning nice, interesting things for the future. I think maybe Hanoi lacked that as well. But again, that is part of the vision that I was talking about. Just get the league started. Someone needs to step up in Hanoi or it will never happen. Period.

6] What are the main things you miss about living in Vietnam?

I have some lifelong friends there. And since I came to Vietnam in 1991 I felt somewhat like a pioneer. There weren’t many expatriates then, especially from my country as there was still an embargo on there. I saw both Saigon and Hanoi go from sleepy cities to boom towns of sorts. I do miss the camaraderie that was in the community. I am missing the next stage of growth there. I have no regrets though. I see my life as a journey and don’t really see myself tied to any one place. I don’t like to be defined that way. In fact, though I have lived in Bangkok more than seven years now I don’t feel I am a part of this place either. Who knows what is on the horizon?

That said, I also miss the cuisine. Vietnamese and Thai are both way up at the top of my list. Oddly enough as well, I kinda miss Colin Johnston’s pub golf nights. But then again, I don’t miss late night rides to Vũng Tàu.

7] Have you played much darts since being in Thailand and how would you describe the darts scene over there?

I was captain of the mid-Sukhumvit team, the D’Pelican Saints. Like my teams of the past, The Emerald in Hanoi and the Really Rottens in Saigon, we started out at the bottom of the rung and then clawed our way to the top. We won several championships in a row. Then it all ended. I kinda got ‘handed’ this role as D’Pelican wanted two teams and Matthew Posadas was captain of one team already. In a way I took this on reluctantly because I said when I started playing in Bangkok that I would play as long as politics didn’t weigh into it. Well, a while back it did. There was a league level issue that took over the psyche of the league regarding who “owns” the league so I quit the entire league. I don’t really play anymore except for the occasional pick up game. The last time I played was Sunday last week. Vladimir Pustokhin was in town and he goaded me into a match at the Moonshine Pub in Queen’s Plaza. We both used house darts. He beat me 2-1 then I returned the favor, beating him 2-1. It was for fun and that’s what we had. No politics.

8] What are you up to these days?

I have been focused on business quite a bit. It is growing quite well for me now. Over the past few years this has meant lots of travel. One of the old darts hands has been quietly rumbling about a new, non-political darts league here in Saigon and asked me to take part. The jury is still out on that one.

9] And finally – Pad Thai or Pho?

Hmmm… I wonder if you could make a phở out of pad thai? I bet that would be better than squirrel head stew! Hard to pick so what I’ll say is this: Pad thai in the day. Phở is for the night!

Review of Tuesday 7th October matches

untitled

Division 1

IB Viet blew away the Pinoy Patriots early on but in the end were thankful for a narrow 2-1 victory from Dung in the final Singles. The Patriots applied some pressure in the Singles with three straight victories but fell short in the end ,the final score being 8-4. The undoubted star of match was Mike ,who managed 12 tons, 4 checks and a high 110 finish. In a high quality game he was not alone as Jeorge [87] and Xu [86] got high finishes too for their respective sides. Xu topped the tons scoring for IB Viet ,with 8 and also 5 checks. Rick was missing the game with illness ,so hope he is making a speedy recovery. The victory means that IB Viet now hold a three point advantage over the Pinoys in the race for the title.

Mabuhay messed up the chance of a victory over Really Rottens ,losing the last three matches when they seemed poised for victory. The Rottens fightback ,ensured they gained a well deserved but unlikley point.  Matt and Alex claimed the last two Singles and then Roch got the all important team game check. Zarggie’s win over Tom in the third match had seemed to ensure a winning night ,but such is the fighting spirit of this Rottens side you can never count them out.Three Mabuhains managed 5 tons ,Jonel,Zarggie and Adrian, while Mario and Jonel shared the checking honours with 3 each. Roch was the top performer on the night for the Rottens and despite losing his Singles ,he claimed 5 tons and four checks.

In  one of the other two matches Alayah‘s woes continued ,where despite taking a 2-0 lead over Those Guys ,they eventually went down 8-4. It was a match of ‘so nearly’ as they lost all three doubles 2-1. Only Tommy San and Zach could, manage a Singles win and there is a a peculair Forfeit loss to them too, despite seemingly having eight players???? For Those Guys , Matt had a good night but Big Boy fell to a suprise loss. Both managed four tons and four of the team contributed three checks. Alan for Alayah , had a great 91 high check and topped the tons chart with 5.

Finally Nomads overcame The Prixx 7 -5, where a pretty strong Singles and Triples were key to their victory. After a brief absence ,Chad returned with no ill effects, getting 9 tons and 4 tons for his team , whilst Woz for The Prixx scored 4 tons and 4 checks to give his team some chance of gaining some points, however he lacked support from his team mates with only Thuy Tran really causing any trouble to the Nomads . It was a great team performance for the boys from Chilli Bar, with all six scoring tons and only Jeff failing to register a check.
Division 2

BnB moved above the Buddha Bar with a pretty comfortable 8-4 victory. They were always in control of the game and made sure of victory with two Singles games to go. Buddha made a fight of it taking those last two games but could not make it closer and lost the team game. Rex for BnB, had the perfect checking game on the night ,helping himself to 6.It was a night with not too many tons with four player getting two each for BnB and Brendan topping the charts with 3 for Buddha. Tun had a solid night and got 4 checks for the losers

Madhouse’s miserable season continued against NSW. They had started so brightly taking the first three games, however after that they lost the two remaining doubles and only Graeme managed a Singles victory. They did add some respectablility to the score line with a team game win but the damage had already been done. For NSW the win continued their surge up the table. Only two players registered tons for Madhouse ,with Markus getting three and Graeme one. NSW fared little better with Mike G,Tony and Ed scoring a solitary ton. Markus led the way in checks ,with three for Madhouse ,and it was a real team effort for NSW where everyone got at least two checks.

The Vinyls continued their unbeaten season with a good win over Bernies Best, who must be concerned about their league position. They found themselves struggling after the winning the first triples and had a disasterous doubles, losing all three and despite a good perfromance in the Singles, where they shared the games three a piece ,they had given themselves too much to do. I am sure Mark against Lee in the last match would have been interesting. Matt was hitting the triple 20 on a regular basis ,managing six tons for his victorious side and helped himself to a 91 high check. he also topped the checking charts with four. For a disappointed Bernies , other than three for Thanh Tiger ,tons were very thin on the ground, whilst Thang managed three checks.

In the final match we saw the Dirty Harrys continue their fine season with a hard fought win over Charmed Assassins. The match earlier in the season had been awarded to the Dirty Harrys after an unfortunate incident ,which was a shame as these two teams produced a good match. Mark from the Harrys will be wondering exactly how he maanged to score five tons but was unable to get a single check. The key to the game was the Triples and Doubles ,in which the Assassins could only manage one win.Tons were flowing not just for Mark ,but for three Assassins ,with Paul getting six and Russell and Andy five each. Aussie Russell topped the checks ,with four for the gallant losers. For the Harrys , Dan and Devon got four each too.

Division 3

The Tavern are looking favourites even at this early stage to take the title after a pretty convincing 9-3 home win over Black Magic on Tuesday night. Black Magic went into the Singles 3 -2 up and looking good, only for a rather spectacular collapse and lost all the remaining games. It wasn’t all one sided though with four of those defeats being 2-1. For the Tavern, Karl once again had an impressive night with 5 tons and 3 checks. Drama managed 3 tons and a couple of checks for the Magic.

Second placed The Udder Team lost a bit of ground on the leaders only managing a draw against understrength Phattys Phukkers. The Udders held a 6 -3 lead at one stage but a battling rearguard action snatched a point for the boys from Phattys. In Matty’s absence, Cathal was the top performer for the home team with a couple of tons and 4 checks and Thuong contributed 4 checks also. For the Phukkers Jimish continued his good form and managed 4 tons and 4 checks in his teams’ fight back and the improving Ben also managed 4 checks.

Dreamtime and Tequila Toros also shared the points at M52 Bar. The point helped move Dreamtime further away from the bottom and kept Toros in the race for second place. A strong end to the Singles had put Dreamtime in the lead but a check from Neil in the team game ensured that Toros did not go home too disappointed. That topped off a great night for Neil with 6 tons and 4 checks and Marc as usual performed well for the boys from Tequila Bar. For Dreamtime, Dan topped the tons chart with 4, whilst Thuy and John helped their team with 4 checks each.

In the final game of the night we saw BIA gain revenge for their opening day defeat against ACDC. Like their previous game against Phattys, the girls just left themselves too much to do after the Triples and Doubles. They once again outperformed the opposition in the Singles, taking four of the games which gave them a great chance to snatch a draw in the team game. Unfortunately for them BIA Captain, Ken, checked it and ensured that the girls remain in last place. Not many tons for the girls but Gigi was the best checker with three. For BIA who surprisingly sat out Donald in the Singles, they too did not manage a lot of tons, with Dale getting the most with 2 and in the checking department Bala managed 4.

Pikey Pete’s Predictions

crazy dave

Division 1

The Prixx v Alayah

The bottom two meet at Harry Casuals this Tuesday and an outright victory is needed by both to help them try and catch The Really Rottens. Alayah have had a hard season and have just one point to show for their efforts. Last week they probably did not expect to overturn Those Guys but they really need their form to take an upturn and if they cannot gain a win here I think they are doomed in all honesty. The Prixx have had difficulty finding their feet in the league so far but are usually quite competitive and last week narrowly lost to The Nomads. In the previous game between these two, The Prixx ran out quite comfortable 8-4 winners. Given their position it is not too surprising to see that Alayah have not really had anyone sit up in Singles, with Zack the only player to claim more than two wins. Two players, Alan and Willy who previously had quite impressive records will need to play and win regularly and if these two and Sinh can get going on Tuesday they have a chance of a result. The Prixx have the impressive Thuy Tran and Woz having good seasons but they need a little more support from their team mates. I am going for a 7-5 win to The Prixx in this one.

Really Rottens v Pinoy Patriots

The Patriots can claim to have the form player of the Division going into this game against the Rottens , Mike’s awesome performance last week however was not enough to save them from a defeat against Ice Blue Viet. It was costly defeat in terms of them trying to get the title and this week they come up against the draw specialists Really Rottens. Five draws show that this team, if on form, can beat anyone and last week the draw against the reigning champs, Mabuhay, was evidence of this. For the Rottens Matt, Guppy and Alex have had four wins a piece and others such as Tom and Trang have given able support. A blast from the past made an appearance last week too in the shape of Emile! The Patriots also have some strong players in the shape of Mike [of course] ,Rey ,Jeorge and Mariel so it could be an interesting game. The previous game saw a narrow 7-5 win to the Patriots and I predict a repeat of the score line this time around.

IB Viet v Nomads

In the previous match earlier in the season the Nomads grabbed a useful point against IB Viet ,so will not be totally apprehensive facing the leaders and they welcomed Chad back last week too. The team from Ice Blue remain unbeaten and their form in recent weeks has been impressive but as the three draws this season testify you can get at them ,despite their strong lineup. Nomads can field a pretty strong front five though and they have fared well in the Singles this year ,with Chad the outstanding player ,with Brett and Logan not far behind. For IB Viet their strong first five have been the foundation to this seasons success Rick and Dung are undefeated and Xu, Nhan and to a lesser extent Hai ,have ensured strong performances in the Singles with tons a plenty. I expect a close game and am actually going to say the same as my last prediction ,with a repeat result from earlier in the season, as I can see Nomads getting a 6-6 draw.

Those Guys v Mabuhay All-Stars

Mabuhay probably occupy their lowest league position for quite a few years as they sit presently in fourth place. It means they probably have lost their title, barring a spectacular collapse from IB Viet. Too many of their games have ended in a draw this year and last week against Really Rottens was a perfect example of how they are failing to kill off teams from a winning position. With Those Guys you you never know what you are going to get ,though only two defeats so far suggest that the Filipinos should be very wary of them and indeed in the previous match Those Guys only fell to a narrow 7-5 defeat. Adrian has shown excellent form and whilst all the others have made contributions they have lacked consistency in the Singles. For Those Guys, Big Boy, Odilicious and B-LO have proved the most dangerous players, whilst the King brothers have found life a little more hard going this season. I am going to sit on the fence with this one and say a 6-6 draw .

Division 2

Charmed Assassins v The Vinyls

The Assassins remain rooted to the bottom of the table and still winless [a feeling I know too well after the Phukkers last year], however will take some confidence from a close match last week against the high flying Dirty Harrys. Their cause has been helped by new player Paul [3-0] and the returning Russell. Last time around this match was a close 7-5 to The Vinyls and I cannot see anything but a victory for the table toppers. They had a comfortable 8-4 win over Bernies Best last week and are still to lose a match. They have a strong close knit squad where a majority of Matt, Huck, Mario, Lee [YES LEE!] and Paul are more than likely to pick up a Singles win. Andy for the Charmed Assassins has had a very useful season and seems a sensible choice to play in the anchor game. As I said I am going for a Vinyls win here but if Paul and Russell turn up it will strengthen the Assassins squad and it could be as close as the previous game between the two. I am going for a 7-5 win to The Vinyls.

Bernies Best v BnB Saigon Retro

Unfortunately I can only see a similar outcome in this game to the earlier meeting between these two, when BnB ran out winners 9-3. Bernies have struggled for most of the season to get that all important win and were well beaten last week. They can battle as their four draws show but BnB will be just too strong. Thanh Tiger is their best player stats wise and has had some good support from Yuki, Mike and Xuan but they lack the depth of players who regularly win their Singles games. BnB on the other hand have JayR, Rex, Roden and Sam all gaining five or more Singles victories and contributing the most checks in the other games. Not going to make Shrini a happy chap here but I see another 8-4 win loss for Bernies Best this week.

Buddha Bar v Madhouse

In a Division that really is split in to two halves at this stage ,it is perhaps surprising to see the team that came down from the top Division in the lower bit and the team promoted sitting comfortably in the top half. But Buddha have taken to life in Division 2 quite well and Madhouse have struggled. Buddha will be looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat against BnB last week and are looking for a repeat of their 8-4 victory earlier in the season . To no-one’s surprise Tun has shown excellent form and has a 7-1 record but he has had some good support from quite a few of his other team members, especially Brendan and Adam , whilst Scotty is always capable of having a good night at the oche. For Madhouse it has been a frustratingly poor season with their only victory coming from a walkover. Only Luke and Markus have shown any real form in Singles and Colin has been absent too much. I see a 8-4 win for Buddha Bar here and Madhouse will finds themselves stuck in the relegation battle.

No Star Where v Dirty Harrys

NSW’s renaissance continues and a good result here will consolidate a mid-table position but they may find it difficult against Dirty Harrys small but battling squad. We have no reference in regards to an earlier match as NSW had to forfeit due to lack of players. Ex- Assassin, Brian has been an excellent addition and has proven, with Fudgie ,to be a top performer for his season .Lee and El Tel have given good support but they have missed Mike G’s regular attendance. Dirty Harrys had a good win last week and see themselves sitting in second place. Paul and Dan have four wins a piece and Dixie has proven pretty solid but for these guys it is very much an all round team effort. I am going for a hard fought draw 6-6.

Division 3

Tequila Toros v Tavern

Whilst Toros have stuttered a little in the last couple of matches against Black Magic and Dreamtime ,they will be hoping that the comforts of their home venue will improve their luck. They could not have asked for a harder task as they try to bounce back ,entertaining the unbeaten leaders Tavern. The leaders confidence will be high after an impressive victory over Balck Magic last week. They have a very settled team and Karl, Johnny and Rab continue to dominate the stats tables and have good support from fellow team members. Toros’s Neil had a crackers last week and Marc still continues to look good ,however I can only see another victory for the Tavern and am going for an 8-4 win for the visiting side. The corresponding fixture earlier in the season was an extremely close 7-5 win for Tavern ,so I may be well off here in the nature of this predicted victory.

Phattys v BIA

In the match earlier in the season BIA claimed a 7-5 win against an understrength Phattys side though they gained a good point last week against The Udder Team, the Phukkers were again struggling for numbers so they may not be fancied this week. However I have inside information that they may well welcome back a few players for this game so it could be interesting. BIA got a 7-5 win over ACDC last week but nearly threw the game away with a poor Singles performance and one where Donald sat out –I don’t think they can afford to do this against what could be a strong Phukkers side. Ken continues to play well and he and Donald are the dangerous players in the side ,though Keith and recently Bala have been supporting well so far. For the Phukkers ,Jimish is the form player and Ben’s recent run of games have seen him look good. They will also hope to have Geordie and Niall returning for this fixture. I see a 7-5 win here for the home side.

Black Magic v The Udder Team

Black Magic’s three game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt halt last week against the Tavern. They were missing Manniken Pis and had looked good in the triples and doubles but failed to get anyone dominating a Singles game and this proved very costly. They return to Voodoo and a game against the second placed Udders. The Udders, admittedly missing top man Matty last week ,will probably feel they should have got more than a point against a weakened Phukkers last week , but some good individual performances from Thuong and Cathal in particular will give them confidence going into this fixture ,especially if Matty returns. For the Magic they really need Captain Rob1 to show his true form in this game ,if he does so they have a fair chance of upsetting the guys from The Spotted Cow and making the race for second that bit more interesting. I will predict a 6-6 draw here as the unknown key factors for me are if Matty returns for The Udders and if Rob1 can get his Singles form back. A hard one to call.Last time around the Magic claimed a 7-5 win ,with impressive Triples and Doubles being the main factor to the victory.

ACDC V Dreamtime

In the last two weeks ACDC have had ‘if only’ matches against the Phukkers and BIA. They performed brilliantly in the Singles after slow starts in the Triples and Doubles and lost both Team Games ,when a point in both matches was probably justified. Dreamtime are proving very stubborn opposition this season and not giving anyone an easy victory. Recent draws against Udder Team and Tequila Toros ,have shown a true battling spirit in their small squad. We have seen great contributions from Dan and Thuy in recent weeks. For ACDC ,the form of Solo has been the highlight ,but Gigi,Piki and Bebe have shown good recent form too. The result last time saw a victory for Dreamtime and I expect a very competitive game this time around and am actually going to predict an upset given the Singles form of the ACDC. A 7-5 win for the girls from Red Bar.

who-are-ya_designThuy Tran -The Prixx

This week we have our second female player for this section in the shape of Thuy Tran ,who has taken both her team and the league by storm ,since joining the league a few seasons back. Her form has made many sit up and take notice as she has  claimed victory after victory ,whilst regularly finding the triple 60 and that all important check.  In the last few years The Prixx have had to say adios to their top players in Bourney and then Donald but they seem to have unearthed  another gem of a player in Thuy Tran !!!

10151965_423668934435480_1284913851_n

1. So Thuy you are relatively new to playing darts. How did you start and how did youend up with the merry bunch known as The Prixx?

Actually It was by chance that I got into darts. Back in 2011- 2012, I was working in Peaches in Phu My Hung and on every Saturday when the Prixxx had their training sessions I used to watch them and just wondered what was the thrill with darts. Then when the team invited to throw a few darts, I started beating the boys.

2.Your form over the last two seasons has been really impressive , especially for someone new to the game .Do you practice much?

Ask the staff at Ice Blue, they will vouch about my commitment to training.

3.The Prixx are having their first time in the top Division. In your view how is it going?

It’s a learning curve for the team. We need more time, will improve and get stronger.

4. What has been your enjoyable victory so far in your darts career?

Clearly when the team wins. As for my darts career, I’m still new to the game. Let’s wait and see. But beating the big boys like Xu and Rick Horton in friendly’s and league matches must be the highlight!

5.What is your favourite away venue?

Of course, Ice Blue

6.We have ACDC and a few Vietnamese girls playing for other teams but how do you think we could get more female players to turn up and join teams?

The question is what made me pick up darts. Exposure. We are naturally quite competitive. Teach us and watch us go at it.

And more guys could bring their gf’s 😉

7. What bit of playing on Tuesday nights do you enjoy the most?

The camaraderie amongst fellow teammates and the opposing team. The nod of acknowledgement before battle begins… ^^.

8.Favourite team to play against.

I don’t one have favourite team to play against. Because I enjoy playing with all the teams.

9.Who do you like paying doubles with most in The Prixx and why?

I have been playing doubles with Melvin mostly. We practice with each other a lot. He understands my game as I do his.

10.Burger King or McDonalds?

Burger King

11.What darts do you play with?

A 23g Harrow Fire

12.What do you do for work in Saigon?

I’m working for a worldwide logistics company.

13.Are you originally from Saigon?

I’m from Lam Dong province. If you know Da Lat city Rose

14.And finally! Many of us drink too much on a Tuesday, do you have a favourite beverage on darts nights ?

Tiger draught with a slice of lime.

Venues Review

This edition Rob 1, Captain of Black Magic gives us the rundown on The Tavern in Phu My Hung.

The Tavern

untitled

The Tavern

It has been a while since I ventured out to The Tavern due to our teams travelling in opposite directions for a few seasons.

The darts area here is one of the better ones in the league as it is spacious with plenty of alleyway between the 2 boards. The seating area is comfortable and conducive to watching the other matches.

Lighting and AC are both good. It’s certainly not the lack of light that causes me to miss what I’m aiming for so often!

The ambiance is what you choose to make it as there were no other punters in the darts area. The music was a fine selection of hits from the 90s. I am not ashamed to say that I knew every single one of them!

The food was hot and plentiful with the standard fare of deep fried goodness and pizza. Service on the whole was very good with minimal wait time for drinks to be delivered and prices were pretty standard for beer with wine significantly less than the bars in D1 are charging these days. Bills came quickly and change was also delivered promptly.

The Tavern has been doing this for a while and does it all pretty well. I’d like it more if it was closer to D1 or D2!

Overall ratings: Playing area : 9/10 (lost a mark because you couldn’t see the laptop with the score on Board 1) Service: 9/10 Ambience : 6/10 for the lack of atmosphere beyond what the teams provided, but up to 7/10 due to the 90s awesomeness! Prices : 8/10 Snacks : 8/10

Location: 1/10 (it scores 1 for being in HCMC!)

View from the Oche Part 3 [eventually!]

23 Sep

Eventually got round to the third part of this installment and a look at Division One as we approach the halfway mark of the season. Pikey Pete will continue his predictions after not doing too bad ,though I think Rex from BnB Saigon Retro did not take kindly to the predict loss for his team!! A  new feature this week will be venues review -starting with my own reviews of Gartenstadt and Tequila Bar. I hope to get some other players to review some other bars in the future. [Our second Where are they Now? is unfortunately delayed till the next edition as Gary Dale has been too busy ,but he has promised to send me in the next week.

NNNN

Division One

After the dominance over recent seasons of Mabuhay this season is looking a lot more competitive and there have been some interesting results so far.

Ice Blue Viet

The only team with an unbeaten record IB Viet lead the standing and deservedly so. The only two teams to stay with them and get any points are their closest challengers Nomads and Mabuhay ,who both gained draws. Other teams have been blown away by this team and their four victories have been big ones. Will they go unbeaten in the first half ? Well Those Guys will have something to say about that in the game next week but I predict IB Viet will triumph. They have used nine players and though Nhan stands unbeaten so far ,their main power players are Xu and the returning Rick. Xu suffered a surprise defeat to the outstanding woman’s player in the league at the moment ,Thuy Tran ,but I think he will continue to dominate this league. Rick returning to the fold after his self-imposed break from darts has definitely made them a stronger team this year. I think they have all the attributes to go on and tak the title ,though I bet Nomads and Mabuhay will have something to say about that!

Nomads

Now becoming an established Div 1 team ,The Nomads are right up there challenging for the top spot . They have had steady results with wins against Prixx [8-4] .Alayah [11-1] and an excellent win this week against Mabuhay [7-5] .They got a creditable draw against IB Viet , but would probably have expected to have beaten Really Rottens . Their one defeat was against Those Guys ,an old adversary and a team that can upset anyone on their day. They probably need a little more consistency to maintain their challenge. They have probably one of the smallest squads in the Division but that tightknit team spirit is what benefits them. Probably one of the most modest players in the league ,Chad, is their outstanding player with a 6-0 record so far ,but he has been ably supported by Logan and Brett, whilst Jeff seems to be getting back to playing his best darts too. I can see a top three finish but I am not sure they have quite enough in them to challenge for top spot all the way to the end of the season ,but I know they would love to prove me wrong.

Mabuhay

The champs are probably having their worst start to a season for many a year but yet they still maintain their top three place. Only one loss to Nomads but too many matches have been draws [ against IB Viet,Really Rottens and The Prixx] . The 11-1 win over Pinoy Patriots was a stamp of authority in regards to as who is the top Filipino team in the league and a useful 7-5 win over Those Guys added points on the board. They have suffered from missing Jun all season, whilst Jonel is gradually working his way back to form. Adrian had been on fine form and he has had good support from both Zarggie and Raymond. They of course will keep challenging till the end and have a good chance to snatch the title again ,if only they can turn those draws into wins. They probably need another player to start to dominate in Singles ,like in previous seasons when they had two or three players in the top of the standings.

Pinoy Patriots

This team could well be in second once they play their game in hand and whilst some in Division 1 maybe surprised by the newcomers ,I could have told them to be wary after the way they played last year. They have a solid core of very good players in Rey,Jeorge and Mike. These guys can beat any other player in the league on their day. This season Mariel has joined them and also looks like a useful player. Their defeat to Mabuhay may not have been too surprising but the nature of it was ,as they were thrashed 11-1.Their only other defeat was another heavy one on opening week against IB Viet.Decent victories against Those Guys, Prixx and Really Rottens have put them in the position they find themselves. Will they challenge for a top three spot ,in all likelihood they will maintain a top half position but I do not see them overtaking a team like IB Viet. [ Update -and indeed they did beat Alayah so go second]

Those Guys

A team that will always give the opposition a real battle ,on the oche and in the drinking stakes. Those Guys enjoy their darts and have had a pretty solid first half and are probably where they expected to be. A couple of draws against Really Rottens and Alayah are games in the second half they will be aiming to turn into victories if they wish to get into the top half. They have had an excellent win against high flying Nomads and a crushing victory over The Prixx. Their defeats against the two Filipino teams were narrow and are matches in the second half that can aim to get something out of. A hard last match of the first half of the season awaits them next week though, against leaders IB Viet – a possible upset on the cards.Big Boy tops their standing with a 5-1 record and he has been supported in the main by Odi [3-3] and B-LO [4-2]. The King brothers will be looking for better fortune in the second half of the season. Should be a comfortable mid table finish for them.

Really Rottens

Too many draws have hampered the Rottens progress so far this year ,with the points shared with Mabuhay,Those Guys and Nomads. Such results show that they are a team that is maybe capable of doing better. Only one win so far and that came against struggling Alayah. They were thrashed as many have been by IB Viet. Guppy has only managed three games so far and with a 3-0 record ,they are missing his regular attendance. Other players such as Tom,Trang and Matt have had good nights but no one is consistently winning week in week out. The Rottens are too strong to get dragged into a relegation struggle I feel ,but will probably have to settle for a mid-table position at the end of the season.

The Prixx

The Prixx have found life in Division One a little bit of a struggle and the step up in class has seen them only claim one draw and a win ,as well as a couple of heavy defeats. Their one victory came against bottomed placed Alayah and probably the highlight of the season was a draw against the champ Mabuhay. They have recently had two heavy defeats came against IB Viet and Those Guys and will need to bounce back if they are not to find themselves returning quickly to Division 2. They have a small squad of eight , where the Thuy Tran has really shone for them with a 4-2 record and her game is going from strength to strength , highlighted with her recent win over Xu of IB Viet. There have been useful contributions from Woz [3-3] and the always smiling Melvin [2-4] ,other players have struggled a little for form so far. I hope they can pull away from the relegation spots but my head says that they lack the strength in depth and may well fill one of the bottom two places at the end of the season.

Alayah

Alayah having narrowly avoided relegation last season unfortunately find themselves propping up the table as we approach the halfway mark and one has to fear for them on the evidence of present results. They have struggled to get a settled team ,week in week out and this has not really helped their cause. They have used 11 players so far and only Alan, Zack and Sinh have played more than 3 matches. They had a positive start to the season with a 6-6 draw against Those Guys but recent weeks have seen too 11-1 defeats against IB Viet and Nomads and I fear for them come the end of the season.Alan is the only player to have won more than one singles game and that tells a sorry story for this long established and popular team. [ Update unfortunately my view was reinforced as they lost 9-3 in a delayed fixture ]

Pikey Pete’s Predictions

Our new gypsy predictor did not do too badly last time around and whilst not getting exact scores, picked most of the results the correctly [except of course BnB’s tremendous draw -that’s right isn’t it Rex?].So the next matches are the ones that mark the halfway point of the season.

Division One

Alayah v Mabuhay

Mabuhay will be coming into this game on the back of a defeat and that has happened so few times in recent years it will be interesting to see how they will react. They probably could not have picked [and no disrespect meant] a better game to get back to winning ways ,with rock bottom Alayah up against them this week. Another heavy defeat for the team from Red Bar ,with a 9-3 defeat in the delayed game against Pinoy Patriots. Unfortunately I do not see anything else but a heavy defeat again and am going for a 9-3 win for Mabuhay.

IB Viet 8 v Those Guys 4

Really Rottens 7 v The Prixx 5

Nomads 7 v Pinoy Patriots 5

Division 2

Buddha Bar v NSW

I think the NSW recovery will continue in this game against a Buddha bar team who has done very well in the first half. NSW grabbed a draw last week, when they even left their top performer Fudgie out of the Singles line up. Buddha’s match last week did not end on a high note but they gained a convincing 9-3 win over the struggling Assassins, looking particularly strong in the Singles. I have a feeling in my water that NSW will claim at least a point.

Madhouse 3 v The Vinyls 9

Bernies Best 6 v Charmed Assassins 6

Dirty Harrys 5 v BnB 7

Division Three

Phattys Phukkers v ACDC

Both teams will be hoping to pick up some points from this game as they try to edge to mid table respectability. ACDC picked up a well-deserved point against Black Magic last week and will fancy their chances against an inconsistent Phattys side. The Phukkers fell to their fourth 7-5 loss last week and will be looking to bounce back against the bottom side. If Phattys can get a strong side out a win is possible but they have struggled to do so all season, so I think the safest bet will be the points shared. 6-6

Other matches

Black Magic 7 v Tequila Toros 5

BIA 4 V Tavern 8

An Udder Team 7 v Dreamtime 5

Venues Review

Phattys Phukkers have come across two new venues during the first half of the season in Gartenstadt and Tequila Bar.

Here is my review of both:

Gartenstadt

imagesCAUZA7O6

The home of BIA. I had no idea till we were scheduled to play there that this place even had a darts area and if you just walked in neither would you. It would seem that the darts area here is maybe just used on Tuesdays[though I am sure someone knows better than me].

It is not a darts players paradise if you are an asthmatic, as you must climb to the top of a few flights of stairs at the back of the bar/restaurant area, though the climb is not as quite as bad as the one at Harry Casuals. Mind you we are all a fit bunch of people aren’t we so this should not be a great negative.

At the top you will find a fair sized room with two boards. The aircon is good and the lighting for the boards is fine. There is background music , however it is cheesy stuff to say the least. There were a couple of servers who went up and down the stairs getting drinks ,not quick but not too bad considering. Snacks were a selection of wedges and a pizza.

The playing area is ok ,though a little cramped during doubles. Good area at the side for viewing one board at least. The toilet is just off the side of the room. I guess my only real negative about the venue would be the prices of the beer most of us drink –it is considerably more expensive than most of the expat bars we usually play at and I think it should offer some sort of discount to the darters on darts night. It does sell some nice German beer though.

Bills at the end of the night seemed fine [if a little pricey] and we did not have to wait long to receive them

Overall ratings:

Playing area : 6.5/10

Service; 6.5/10

Ambience : 6/10 [though you are not disturbed by any other customers]

Prices : 5/10

Snacks : 7/10

Tequila Bar

10502017_753896728017510_5434939448789707435_n

A new bar and home for a new team in Division Three, the aptly named Tequila Toros.

This bar is shaped like so many other bars in town. It has the bar going down most of one side with chairs and tables opposite. The darts area is at the bottom and has two boards. There are two small couches in the darts area ,one seemed to make sense and was used for one team to base themselves but the other right next to the boards was a bit of a mystery.

The set up was ok; lights were good and the boards in good condition. It is pretty narrow and with doubles it is a bit cramped. Maybe a few too many chairs behind playing area but viewing both boards was not too bad.

Service was good, plenty of bar staff .They were not too busy when we first started but it was busy at the end. Prices were the same as at most other venues, though they ran out of the crowd favourite SML, midway through the evening. Bills were accurate and came quickly at the end of the night.

As with so many venues the toilet is next to the darts area so you get other customers walking behind the oche but it was not too bad.

Do not know what happened with the snacks, our team got a garlic pizza and Toros on their table got spring rolls and something else. I do not think any thought was put into giving both teams the same selection; it seemed to be one lot of snacks just put on the available spaces on the tables.

The bar is just starting out and talking to the Toros boys I think they will maybe make improvements to the darts area in the near future.

Playing area: 6.5/10

Service: 8/10

Ambience: 7.5/10

Prices: 7.5/10

Snacks: 5/10

View from the Oche Part 2

9 Sep

I had planned to do three parts before Tuesday but unfortunately due to a bout of sickness Division 1 will have to wait till next week , so will our feature with Gary Dale. This part will look at Division 2 and also include some predictions and a Who are Ya? featuring a real character of The SIDL , George Humphreys ,currently turning out for The Tavern ,in Divsion 3.

untitled

Division 2

So this part we look at my old battleground Division 2. I guess it has a slightly distorted look caused by No Star Where’s initial struggles to get a team together and a little altercation causing three forfeits already.. I must say that I am glad they have survived as they have been established so long and were the late Stonecold ‘s team ,so I have a fondness for them and the memories of the games against them over the years. Well back to this season.

BnB Saigon Retro Bar lead the way after a good start to the season. They have really steamrollered teams with three 9-3 victories over Buddha, Bernies and Charmed Assassins ,with only NSW halting their march onwards ,with a very creditable draw for the team just scratched together. They have used nine players so far and have a solid core of five players who have started so well: JayR, Roden, Rex and Sam and it is nice to see that old stalwart Alfred having a nice start to the season. They have yet to play their fellow leaders The Vinyls and I think those two matches could be key as to who may end up top. A quick return to Division 1 is in the offing I think.

The Vinyls are level on points with the team mentioned above and cannot say I am too surprised. They are team packed with experience and mostly in Division 1. They have settled into life in this division all too easily ,though they cannot get too cocky cos they are liable to lapses now and then and whilst on their night they can hammer teams, on other occasions they have struggled. Their performances have shown this with an opening draw against Bernies ,two narrow 7-5 wins over Charmed Assassins and the revitalized NSW. Paul and Huck lead the way in their standings but Phuong,Mario and matt provide plenty of backup. Ooops and nearly forgot Chairman [is he still???] Lee with his 2-2 record. Expect them to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

The Dirty Harrys currently sit in third place but actually did not complete a match till the third week. They have benefited from a walkover against NSW and an award of another walkover after what I will call an altercation in their match against Charmed Assassins. When they did get to finish a match they had a 7-5 win over Bernies but suffered a heavy defeat in the last round away at Buddha Bar. As in previous years they operate with one of the smallest squads ,only six players so far. They have lost Mark but have recruited a new player in Dixie. No sign of Andrew yet, who was a useful player for them last year. Dan and Paul lead the way with two wins each and Devon has thrown some ok darts without the finishing product. Their season depends on them keeping their small squad together and Devon turning his good darts into wins. I think they will probably finish mid table.

Ah the Buddha Bar as consistent as ever. I think they will be fairly happy to sit in mid table on their return to Division 2 and they have had a couple of great performances in beating Madhouse 8-4 and Dirty Harry’s 9-3. However they have also been hammered by the top two, 9-3 and 10-2. I think this shows that they will probably be ok and end up in mid table but are unlikely to challenge for the promotion places. One the outstanding players in the league ,Tun, leads the way in their standings, 3-1 and Scotty ,the outstanding chef in the league is second with a 2-2 record. Brendan and David look like they have some good darts in them too.

Madhouse lie just below half way and are holding their own after their little sojourn into the top division last season. In the past they have been quite partial to the odd draw and this season is no different. They have yet to taste a proper victory this season ,with their only three points coming from a walkover with NSW. They are more than capable though of turning these draws into victories, however I think it is not likely [or that they want] to achieve a return to Division 1 .They most likely will be comfortable in mid table, however they have to face the top two yet so will need to get points on the board against Dirty Harry’s if possible. Apart from their walkover they have lost to Buddha 8-4 ,and drawn with the Assassins and Bernies. Worryingly though they needed the team game in both draws to get the point. Nine players used so far, with Markus leading the way with a 3-0 record. Probably need Colin back more regularly ,as he looked good in his one appearance and victory this season.

Bernies Best are in the lower reaches league at the moment with two draws, including a very creditable draw against Vinyls to show for their efforts. Life in Division 2 has proved to be challenging for the team and they will need to show some more consistency if they are to move up the table at the end of the season. They have some useful players but somehow it is just not gelling all the time. Thanh Tiger tops their standing with a useful 3-1 record and he has had support from Yuki, Mike and Xuan , who are all players that are probably capable of winning quite a few games in this division. An ok start to life in Division 2 and an interesting second half lies in wait for them.

Charmed Assassins did not have the best of starts to the league season and are struggling to recover with only one draw to their name against Madhouse. A battling 7-5 loss to Vinyl and a 9-3 thrashing against BnB Saigon Retro mean they will really need to pick up points against Bernies and Buddha, if they are not to have an uncomfortable second half of the season and they will probably be aiming for at least 4 points from those two games. They have used 8 players so far and Andy has continued his fine form from last year with a 3-0 record. They probably need someone else to show similar form if they are to move up the league – over to you Patrick Hoy!!!

No Star Where will just be happy to be still competing as they came mightily close to folding after the first two weeks. Credit to Fudgie for battling on and managing to recruit new players. After their first two matches ended up in forfeits they have bounced back creditably with a great performance against Vinyls with a narrow 7-5 loss and a great 6-6 draw against the leaders. Fudgie seems to have recruited well with Ash, Brian and Ed all looking like they have some good skill. Will we see the team surging up the league , well if the new players continue in the same way it is very likely. Leading by example Fudgie leads the way for them with two wins. I will watching with interest to see how they go from now on.

George Humphreys – The Tavern

georde

1. So George tells us a bit about your background and how you ended up in Saigon.

I am an American from Texas and I came here in March of 2008 as a rig manager for the largest offshore drilling company in the world. During the first 2 months of my employment here, they offered me a promotion as a “resident” performance drilling manager taking care of clients such as Conoco/Phillips, PETRONAS, Hoang Loang and PetroVietnam. In May 2009 the offshore rig day rates were falling and people were getting laid off. I luckily was offered a substantial early retirement package at 58 years old and I took it.

I am married to a lovely Vietnamese lady from Hue and we have 2 American/Vietnamese children, a son 3 years old and a daughter 2 1/2 months old. When I retired, I have property/home in Texas…..but I had fallen in love with Vietnam, so now this is my home forever.

2. When did your darts career start and what has been your playing history in Saigon?

I started playing darts here in Saigon. Never thrown darts before in my life. I started playing at the Blue Gecko. I was captain for the team. Week in/week out I was begging people to play. I got tired of begging, so I resigned and the team folded. From there I went to Buddha Bar as their co-captain, but living in D-7, it was 17 kilo each way. I kept after Tavern, as they are very near my home, and Karl signed me on as co-captain.

3. You are quite vocal at AGM’s,the website and FB page. What is your view about Saigon darts at present?
I am a 110% supporter of the SIDL and am willing to do most anything to see our league continue and strengthen. We have a good bunch of folks within the league…..but we need more support at the AGM’s from people’s presence. That is the time and place to bring things up and suggest possible ideas. All of this pissing and moaning that has recently gone on is not good. Everyone needs to support our league, simply by being present at the AGM’s. Also, don’t come to complain. If you have a complaint, then be prepared to help resolve the issue or have the answer to fix it.
4. You have started your darts shop at Game On . What was the thinking behind that and how is it going?
I like things that are unique and things that no one else has one of. So as mainly a hobby, I opened the first and only dart shop in the country of Vietnam. I mainly wanted to be able to offer my league mates, darts and supplies that are easily accessible, offer some of the latest and greatest products and offer them at a competitive price. This way, EVERYONE can afford to play, no matter how much money you may have.
5. Favourite darts venue?
Game On and The Tavern due to their spaciousness.

6. What darts do you use and how often would you say you practice?
Right now, Harrows Fire 24 gram. Practice??? No near enough, but at least one day a week.

7. Your team the Tavern have started the season well but I see you have not had too much time at the oche -why is that?

Everyone on our team believes that the better players will play the singles and right no my darts have been crap!

8. What is the most enjoyable aspect of playing darts in Saigon been for you?

A night out with the lads for a few laughs and drinks…..but mainly for the commraderyship and brotherhood.

9. Pho or Spring Rolls?

Pho
10. Favourite team played against?

I like all of the teams. Can’t say that there is a favorite.

11. The highlight of your Saigon darts career?

3 years ago when I threw my fist “180” at the Blue Gecko against the Buddha Bar.

12. Finally George what does the future hold for you and your family?

Raise my 2 children here in Saigon and take care of my families needs. Maybe open another dart shop in the Anh District 2 area.

Gypsy Pat

I have not been able to contact Gypsy Pat this we,probably off to the UK to claim benefits!!! Anyway I managed to find a last minute replacement in Pikey Pete,, who is Gypsy Pat’s second cousin.

Featured match

Mabuhay v Pinoy Patriots

This could be a cracker as the newly promoted team who top the table take on the reigning champs. There is no doubt that the champs have been affected by Jun’s absence and Jonel not playing every game. Adrian still domainates and Zarggie has had a good start to the season. But I think think that the Pinoys have a really strong front three in Mike ,Rey and George plus Mariel has apppeared on the scene and done very well. The Singles draw will be crucial to the outcome of this battle of the Philippines. They take such matches very seriously and it was rumoured that the Pinoys even arranged a practice session at Phattys to try and get used to the boards and environment. I bet my knackered old fridge out the back of the caravan on a narrow 7-5 win for Mabuhay.

BnB Saigon Retro v The Vinyls

The top two meet in another classic match up. Both have been strong this year and  the team who wins this must fancy their chances to go on and seize promtion in the second half- a real six pointer. Both teams have strength in depth and some good performers in their teams. BnB have Roden,JayR,Rex,Sam and Alfred and The Vinyls have plenty of experience in Lee,Paul,Huck and Mario. If they can get Matt V along for the game, I fancy them to take it and Phuong has shown good form this season too.I am predicting probably a surprising 8-4 win to The Vinyls [with even a Singles victory for Chairman Lee].

An Uddder Team v The Tavern

Another top of the table clash takes place this week . Tavern look to continue their winning streak against the second placed Udders. Karl and his team have looked fairly unstoppable but the guys from Spotted Cow will fancy their chances at the rather unique home oche. The Tavern have had strong performances from their front three; Karl ,Johnny and Rab but if the likes of Matt and Cathal can get favourable singles draws they may cause an upset. I am going for a 7-5 Tavern win.

5 Sep

View from the Oche returns with a three parter before the next round of games. This first part will be looking at Division 3 so far and the other two parts will examine the other two Divisions. I am hoping to also have in the third part the return of Gypsy Pat and a Where are They Now feature , which will be Gary Dale ,one of the founding fathers of Saigon darts way back when.

images

So we are well into the new season now and I thought this week’s break would be a good time to look at the three divisions and see how teams and individuals are doing. Are there any surprises? Any new up and coming players ?First up Division 3.

Division 3

The Tavern top the league after four winning games . Two comprehensive victories against ACDC and Black Magic and narrower 7-5 conquests of Phattys and Tequila Toros. They have quite a small squad and are reaping the rewards for this with a consistent six playing most games. Karl, Johnny and Rab have proved to be the solid foundation for their success. A three point lead at this stage is handy and if they do not suffer their key players missing for any periods they will fancy their chances to continue their winning streak going and gain promotion.

An Udder Team is following them closely. A convincing win over ACDC apart ,they have been involved in close 7-5 matches ,two going their way against Phattys and Toros but Black Magic gaining the narrowest of advantages over them. Matty and Cathal are their standout players in what is again small playing squad so far. They give a good game against whoever they play and will be confident going into their biggest match so far against The Tavern, next week.

Tequila Toros have had a pretty solid start to their life in The SIDL and sit fairly comfortably in third. They have been involved in four 7-5 matches. Two victories against Dreamtime and BIA and two losses against the top two Udder and Tavern. Marlon has the best record so far and Cris looks like he has plenty of darts in him, with lots of tons and checks. Only used eight players so far but they seem to have a pretty strong core in that eight. Performances so far suggest they will not be too far away at the end of the season.

BIA have seemingly followed on from last season when inconsistencies dogged them. They have gained useful 7-5 victories against Phattys and Black Magic. But an 8-4 opening week loss to ACDC and a 7-5 loss to Toros , have stopped them imposing themselves on the Division. Of the nine players so far used ,it is no surprise to see Donald topping their stats with 4 straight wins and plenty of checks and tons.He has been ably supported by David,Ken and Keith but no-one else in the team has as yet managed to claim a Singles victory and maybe that is what has been stopping them pushing on . Where will they end up at seasons end is anyone’s guess –could be top – could be bottom .I don’t think they have a clue either but won’t care as long as they are having a good time.

Dreamtime showed improvement towards the end of last season and they have continued this improvement into this campaign. A good 7-5 win over ACDC and a hard fought draw with Black Magic have demonstrated this improvement and their losses too have only been 7-5 ones to Phattys and Toros. Everyone they have so far played ,they have battled strongly with till the end. Andy and Dan have led the way but all have contributed to their performances, with some excellent doubles results in matches. They may not be title contenders but they have shown plenty of capability to cause teams an upset.

Black Magic would have been hoping for a better start to their first experience of life in Division 3 but it has not worked out  well so far for the team from Voodoo. Results have been a real mixed bag ,with a draw against Dreamtime and a 7-5 victory over Udder. However a opening week 10 -2 loss to the Tavern seems to have knocked them slightly, though there are signs of improvement and their 7-5 loss to BIA was mightily close. They have used nine players so far and the return of Tin Tin should help their cause. He ,Manniken Pis , Porridge and Drama all have two Singles wins ,but Captain Rob1 has had a disappointing campaign that he will hope to put right against his old foes Phattys next week. I would expect a stronger campaign from now on ,if they can keep their stronger players turning up week in ,week out.

Phattys Phukkers managed to gain their first victory of the season in the last round with a 7-5 win over Dreamtime but they will be disappointed with the start to the campaign. Their three previous games had all been 7-5 losses. Though Jimish has lost his unbeaten streak ,he still leads their standings 3-1 and Bernie and Niall have provided support in Singles with a pair of wins each. So far they have needed to use nine players and have often struggled to get team together on a Tuesday night. They will be hoping that the win last week turns around their fortunes and they can start turning 7-5 losses into wins.

ACDC find themselves at the bottom of the table at this early stage after what seemed a perfect to the season with an excellent 8-4 win over BIA. Things have not gone so well since then ,with a narrow 7-5 loss to Dreamtime followed by two heavy losses to Udder [10 -2] and Tavern [9-3]. A small squad of seven used so far and all have made contributions ,with Solo and Gigi looking particularly good. On their day they can be a match for any team in this division but they need a few more of those days if they aren’t to find themselves in the lower half come seasons end.

Thought I would look at each teams tons totals which certainly suggest that whilst my team the Phukkers can obviously score we cannot check for shit hence our second bottom position.

Some Captains look back over the Second half and analyse how their teams have performed.

Division 1

Glyn -The Nomads

After an opening match stutter the Nomads first season in division 1 has been a resounding success with us securing 3rd place. This was driven by us only losing one match for the entire second half of the season which included wins against Mabuhay and Team Viet. We are still in the Team KO cup and, fingers crossed, looking forward to doing some real damage as the rounds progress. looking forward to doing some real damage as the rounds progress. Our dedicated group of 6 core players (special mention to Mike who’s stepped in when needed), have all had a solid season with Brett & Glyn on a 9-5 singles record and Chad on 10-4, most impressively we didn’t have a single player throw less than 20 tons. We look forward to the final games of the season and our the Autumn round of matches. Best team performance – Our 7-5 win against the champions in waiting Mabuhay Most impressive opposition player – Guppy, his 11 tons and 6 checks against us was the best darts I’ve witnessed in a long time. Own team MVP – Chad remains our Golden Boy and rounded off the season by taking 2nd place in both tons and checks

Division 2

Aurelius -The Prixx

Second Half Review – The Prixxx by Jiggy (formally known as Aurelius)

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS – yay! However, we didn’t have it all our own way….

In the first half of the season we played very well at times, but lady luck also helped us as while we were snatching 7-5 victories, the other teams around us were taking points off each other with 6-6 draws. And fortunately, fortune again smiled on us as we beat Dirty Harrys, Pinoy Patriots and No Star Where 7-5. In these games a lot happened. Against Dirty Harrys we found ourselves 2-4 down after the first singles, yet pulled off 5 straight singles victories to edge home in a game that could easily have gotten away from us. We then avenged our previous loss against the Patriots and beat NSW with dramatic team game victories. In particular, The Queen of Darts (Thuy) and Captain Fantastic (Melvin) played vital roles and made crucial checks to see us over the line.

With the title all but secured, unfortunately we didn’t pick up any more wins, with 1 loss and 2 draws from our final 3 fixtures. However, it must be stressed that this was due to some great play from our opponents. The Charmed Assassins lived up to their name by handing us a 4-8 defeat, only our second of the season. The Phukkers gave us another great game as always and their league position was definitely not a reflection of their ability. We hope their fortunes change next season as we always enjoy our matches. Finally, despite Aurelius having to play left-handed due to a broken finger and a thread bare squad, Black Magic failed to vanquish us under their curse and what better place to finish the season than at Voodoo’s!!!!

Division 2 has been so competitive. We could easily have been at the other end of the table had we not found those vital checks at vital times. This season has been super fun and we wish all the other teams the best in August.

With the ever reliable Mel, Thuy, Prixler (Peter), Woz and DT picking up regular wins we are looking in good shape to Prixxx Divison 1. Aurelius and Kevin will be hoping for more consistency at the ochy. We also say farewell to Dr Darts (Moulik) who unfortunately will be leaving Vietnam. Watch out Division 1….you’ve been warned.

Patrick – The Charmed Assassins

Our first game of the season saw us travelling to D7 to take on the guys from Dirty Harry’s, very nice bar, great venue except for one thing, could do with the music turned up, I think nerves hit both teams as not many players from either side threw good darts, it was pretty much an even game all the way through and ended up that, 6-6 the final score 13-13 on legs.next up NSW, at the Cow, NSW took both triples (sets have been our weak point this season), then we took two doubles, only one behind, then we went on to take four single and finally the team game to snatch victory, then something went wrong in the following two league games, Pinoy Patriots beat us 9-3, disaster, only Brian Houx played well that night, turns out most of us had had a stressful day, then we played The Prixx, again disaster, once again losing 9-3, Melvin was on fire that night, having five tons and six checks, no excuses this time, we played crap.
In between these two disasters the first leg of the knock out cup was played, we had drawn, surprise, surprise, a D1 team, Those Guys (since I joined my team we have drawn a D1 team every year in the first round), we did have home advantage though, the guys entered in their usual conservative way and welcomed me to D1.Brian took the first triple and only Russell could win one of the first three singles, 2-2, then we won the first two doubles, 4-2, Those Guys were realising it wasn’t going to be a walkover and actually went quiet for at least five minutes, then then sugar pop and B lo snatched the third 4-3, sugar pops went on to take the singles games from Brian, then I won, then Matt took the third for Those Guys, down to the last triples and I managed to check to win the game, an unexpected result all round I think.
After The Prixx, we hosted Black Magic and had a good victory to restore pride, winning 9-3, followed by a by a 7-5 defeat to Dirty Harry’s, we were at home as well, boo.The following games were swinging either way 7-5, a defeat to Pinoy again but much closer at 7-5.
The next round of the knock out cup saw us with home advantage once again, this time taking on the Vinyl bar unfortunately for them super Mario was in Australia, a break for us, we started of well, winning the first triples game and two singles, 3-1, the Vinyls took two doubles to our one, 4-3, then came the singles, I had drawn Thanh, who had only been playing for a month, you would not have thought so, she took the first two legs, I was staring into the abyss, but somehow I managed to rally and take the next three legs, well played Thanh. Daniel and Tram went on to secure victory.
With few games left to write about we seemed to find our form, hitting a winning streak and gaining revenge on The Prixx, finishing third in our first season for a long time in D2 is great, it was tight at the end with Dirty Harry’s breathing down our necks, well done to the team and thanks to all the teams for some great nights, keep up the good work Jimmish with your blogs.

Colin – Phattys Phukkers

The Phukkers had an interesting and … challenging year overall throwing the arrows as we struggled to find a win all season. Coming close, but never quite getting it. A healthy number of draws ending up being our highlight for the season, … except for the stellar performance of Captain Jimish who finished off with a clean 12 – 0 record in the singles. Well done Jimish.

A team with a new look, new name and new faces, the Phukkers had the making of a strong and competitive team but just continuously fell short too many times. That of course did not stop the fun and joy of the matches every Tuesday and hats off to our division competitors for a well played and enjoyable season overall.

Highlights this year would have to have Jimish at the top with that clean record, unmatched by teammates for as long as I know of. Strong performances were seen by all as well here and there with some nights of a hinky curse rearing its ugly head as well, first inhabiting Brownie one night and then Colin the next. We never did quite find out what that was all about, but thankfully it did seem to pass, hopefully never to be seen again. Pam had one of our stellar performances when out of nowhere she produced a near perfect night of darts and five checks against Black Magic.

It looks like the PP will be up against new competitors in a new division for next year (here we come D3), and will do so with a smile on our faces and that is what Tuesday nights is all about.

Phukkers MVP – Jimish without a doubt

Next Season Prediction – Continued end match shots following a great night of darts

Adrian – Dirty Harry’s

It was another mixed bag for us in the second half of the season. We were hoping to maintain our position in the league but we didn’t quite manage that. We got ourselves into a possible promotion position with 2 games to go but unfortunately we weren’t ‘ dirty ‘ enough to see it out and also decided we prefer division 2 🙂

The Matches

First up was an away game at one of our old venues against Charmed Assassins. As in most games we started strongly and had a 4-1 lead going into the singles. Charmed are quite a strong team when they all show up, and they won 4 singles ( which were pretty tight ) to make the team game interesting. Luckily Ryan did the business for us and capped off a captains performance on the night with his 6th check. Inspired on his return to his darting home! A good start for us.

Next up was a home game to the prixx. They took the 2 tripples but we came back strongly and won all 3 doubles with the checks been shared around. Looking at the singles match-ups I fancied us to at least break even. Ironically the only game we won was the game I was confident we would lose, I played well for a change and managed to beat Warren ( the highlight of my season ). But the prixx showed why they won the league with a very strong singles performance, Thuy in particular, who was their best player on the night, won the deciding singles to clinch the win for the prixx. She also hit 5 tons and a high check. Devo hit 5 tons for us for the second week in a row. Overall we were disappointed to lose to match. Shite!

Black Magic were next up. I said in the previous report that I wanted to avoid another arse-slapping finale in this game. With our captain away I wasnt confident that we would as we’d never beaten them and i think only ever drawn once in several attempts. Again we started well and found ourselves 4-1 up heading into the singles. Everyone was throwing well and confident we could lift the vodoo curse. Andrew and Dan took the first 2 singles in good style ( Captain Rob 1 suffering a rare loss against us ) hitting a few tons along the way, impressive scoring and checking and devo followed up with a dramatic win over Drama to clinch the win and put us 7-1 up! I won’t mention what happened next but we won the match. Enough said. Our captain shit his pants when he heard the news. Slap that!

Confidence was high ahead of the arrival of phattys phuckers and we were starting to look up the table. It was a good overall performance from us and a 10 -2 win reflected that. Dan was on fire for us again with 5 checks and 5 tons. Singles wins for Ryan, Andrew and Devo meant that we won our singles match-ups 4- 2 for the first and only time of the season! Jimish got a notable win over dave which kept his unbeaten singles run alive ( cannae believe that like! 🙂 ) Happy days!

After a bye week, in which there were some interesting results, we faced an away game against Pinoy Patriots, in a game that if we won, would have seen us in promotion contention. We felt confident that if we performed we could force an upset. We got off to a good start yet again taking the 2 tripples. But for once our doubles pairings didnt click and we lost all 3 to be behind going into the singles. Pinoy were on form and Mike, Rey and Jeorge showed why they are top of the stats charts with convincing wins. Andrew, with a high check and Ryan got singles wins for us. Unfortunately it was another 8-4 loss to Pinoy and meant that we also slipped from 3rd place in the table. Disappointing!

The final game of the season was against No Star Where. Both teams were safe from relegation and there wasn’t much at stake except a bit of pride and that a win for NSW would put them ahead of us in the table. After a very sluggish start NSW were 2 – up and they took 1 of the doubles, Fudgie playing particularly well, to go 3-2 up going into the singles. Looking at the single match – ups I thought we would at least break-even but it was an off night for the dirty’s. NSW took the first 4 singles to clinch the match.Again fudgie was the key man with a good win over dirty dan, despite dirty dan hitting 7 tons, a team record! He probably would have swapped those for a check though 🙂 Ryan and Devo took the last 2 singles and Dave got the final check of the season to make it 7-5. Anticlimax!

It was a bit of a rollercoaster of a season without ever reaching the top or bottom. I think we’re disappointed not to have finished 4th at least, considering we beat and drew with charmed assassins who finished 3rd. We performed well in the team games but our singles have let us down. Only 3 players with favourable win/loss records and thats what has cost us. But our scoring is improving and I think we should be challenging for promotion in the Autumn season.

Most difficult opponent – I think miss Thuy Tran had the best individual performance against us. Definitely the most improved player in the league as well.

MVP – I’m not sure we have one 🙂 Traditionally it would be Ryan with a 7- 3 singles record and he has had a good season. With the stats format we have 2 players tied at the top on points, Dan and Devo, both having equal checks, Dan with more tons and also having played a match less. So DIRTY Dan is our MVP of the season 😉

On a personal note this is my last season. So I just wanted to say it was a pleasure to be part of the darts league for the past 4 years. I met some great people and have a lot of friends and good memories from being a part of it. I will miss the tuesday night nerves and pizza 🙂 I think i got lucky joining the team that I did, a great bunch of guys, and will definitely miss hanging out and being part of that team. Best of luck next season boys. It’s been emotional!

Rob Crowther- Black Magic

View From the Oche – End of Season Report Black Magic
At the midpoint of the season, Black Magic found itself in a spot of trouble at the bottom end of the table. Unfortunately, this situation did not improve and relegation to Division 3 was the result at the end of the season.
The second half started well with a win over NSW and a creditable draw with Pinoy Patriots with a win in the team game coming back from 400 points down! This was followed by a 5-7 loss to Dirty Harry’s, a draw with Phatty’s Phukkers, another 5-7 loss to Charmed Assassins and a final week draw with The Prixxx leaving us well short of safety.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where we went wrong, although most of the team would probably put it down to poor captaincy! We lost Tintin for a couple of crucial weeks while Rob 1, Drama and Manneken Pis probably have to bear the brunt of it as experienced players who didn’t produce enough on a consistent basis.
Tintin led the way with a 7-3 singles record for the season. Moore or Less was good support at 6-3, while Porridge came good over the second half of the season to finish with a 6-5 record. Manneken Pis and Rob both ended 5-6 which was disappointing for all concerned!
There was no stand out good or bad performance in the 2nd half. We played at much the same level throughout and never did quite enough to move up the ladder. The highlight of the season was probably that team game victory against the Patriots. It’s not often you can overcome a 400 point deficit to win!
We’re looking forward to finding some form in Division 3 next season and hope to be making a quick return to Division 2. If we have to go down, we’re pleased that it’s with the Phukkers and will look forward to another couple of cracking matches!
Division 3
Shrini – Bernies Best
Bernies Best started the Spring season with bang, winning over top team of Division. And continued good performance in 1st5 matches with 4 wins. However in further matches lost some very good players due to their own priorities resulting in to some losses, had face saving with return of our ace player Xuan on the dart-board with newly arrived baby-Victoria & renewed energy and 2 good new players Mike & Lakshmi. Though got beaten by all those whom we had beaten in 1stround!! And side changed, suffered 4 losses. Somehow, started recovering towards end of season and ended up in last 4 matches with 1 draw, 1 loss and wins in last 2 matches and gained 3rdposition. Had good performance by 6 team members, Kalvin scored 180, & 5 members had high finish which number is also notable record of team in Division 2 & 3. In a way 3rdposition happened for good!! As such all team mates were very keen to continue in div. 3 for much greater fun & easy going evenings. Hope to continue with just good enough performance in Autumn season league. Guess what? Best wishes & luck to all. Cheers!

The Off Season

Well even though the leagues finished sometime ago it has certainly still been a busy time at oches around the town.

The Mixed Doubles tournament proved popular once again and came up with victors in Mario and Thuong  in what was a closely fought competition. Chairman Lee and his partner Thanh ,should some impressive darts in the early rounds but fell to the impressive winners at the last hurdle.

The annual World Cup Tournament saw the Viets overcome a strong USA team . Favourites for the title All Star Philippines ,fell at the semi stage after looking unbeatable in the group stage.

The Mid Year party takes place this Saturday and we are back at Lion again after a short break. It should be a good occassion to catch up with fellow players and down a few beers.

The Men and Women’s Doubles are due to take place over the next two Tuesday’s -though it will need a late rush of pairs entering to make it worthwhile over two weeks.

The new Autumn Season is upon us in a few weeks and it will be interesting to see if any teams diasappear or new ones come in ,after what was a pretty stable Spring Season ,with all teams completing the season and very few forefeits.
